Virginia Republicans celebrate inauguration with gerrymandering
On Monday, with civil rights veteran and Democratic State Senator Henry Marsh in Washington for the inauguration, GOP senators slammed an unannounced mid-term redistricting plan through the Senate. Marsh’s absence gave Republicans the one vote majority they needed to pass the redistricting measure that’s designed to maximize safe GOP seats and reduce Democratic seats. Virginia Democrats are outraged at the power play, vowing to take legal action. “There will be litigation, you can pretty much be sure of that,” said Senate Democratic Leader Richard Saslaw told the Washington Post. “I don’t have to remind you the collateral damage from this is going to be immeasurable.” Even Republican Governor Bob McDonnell is criticizing the decision to ram through the legislation. ”This is not an issue that I advocated and I was surprised about the vote yesterday,” McDonnell said Tuesday morning according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. ”I certainly don’t think that’s a good way to do business.” “It goes against every tradition,” Democratic State Senator Creigh Deeds told Talking Points Memo. “It was a dirty trick.” |

This is a geometry problem. On non-state-border edges of voting districts, limit the number interior angles to some reasonable number, like 8. Then redistrict everything according to this rule. You'd get pretty normal looking voting precincts and much more limited opportunity to gerrymander.

Pretty sure the states can do whatever they want in regards to doling out EVs. If the GOP wanted to rig an election they could just appropriate them based on the vote of the members from each legislature.

Are you insinuating that a single vote in St. Pete is worth more than a single vote in Iowa City?

Nebraska has been doing this since 1992. They are a vast majority red state that holds a bung hole of blue in Omaha.
I didn't see anyone crying about them casting an electoral vote for Obama when McCain commanded the popular vote in the state. |

How many more single votes does St. Petersburg have than Iowa City?

You may think its an easier path to the Presidency now but when the Dems start gerrymandering the R's out, you won't be too happy.

I think it's pretty obvious they are.
If these changes being proposed were implemented, Romney would have won the election by like 20 electoral votes, even though he lost the popular vote by 5 million votes. That's outrageous, and anybody in favor of that kind of rigging of an election should honestly be disappointed with themselves. Really, this drum has been beaten by the GOP for a few years now, in what is becoming a really disturbing trend. Rather than shifting their message, which they are only doing marginally, or selling themselves differently, which they are clearly not, they are attempting to rig the system even more than it already is. It's a shame, but it's a necessary shame in a democracy. Our job is to be honest with ourselves and resist it. |

And I never said I agreed with it. I was just wondering why it seems to be ok when a far red state like Nebraska has this in place and the only ones that can benefit from it are the dems. |
