A Pet Naming Quandary

We're getting a new dog and are arguing about names.

My boys (5 and 7) have both settled on the name Chief.

It is wrong of me to not want this name for our new dog because I see it as something of an ill omen for the dog at this point. Is this how far we've sunk?

I'm still pushing for Hugo (a local restaurant, Hugo's, plays a significant role in our family's lives).

Should I just make peace with Chief as a name and have confidence that the pall hanging over the franchise has finally been lifted?

I don't really want to say to the kids, "Listen boys. The Chiefs suck. We don't really want to name our dog after a shitty team do we?"

I approve of Hugo if you give him a proper last name...

Hugo is better because the dog will respond to the 2 syllable call better. In my opinion, anyway.

And the dog will be able to speak German and French. That is a plus, IMO.

That's a good tact I haven't thought of. I'll tell them that all "good" dogs have 2 syllable names. That it ****s with a dog's head to have a 1-syllable name, and they become disobedient and dumb.

Not sure my wife will approve of this tact but... **** it... she's working the store tomorrow and I have the kids to myself.

Everybody names their dog Chief. Think of this as a good creative thinking exercise for your kids.

Be sure that they know what the dog is (breed, size, fur color, etc.) Do you know the dog's personality a bit? Does he have any significant traits that you want highlighted in the name?

Story: When my sister and I were very young (I was 4 and she was 5) we adopted a kitten to replace the one who had died. My sister was extremely attached to the old cat more than anybody else, so she was basically spearheading the entire thing under supervision of my parents. We always had good luck with Persians, so we finally found an all black male kitten Persian. It came time to bring him home, and we were discussing names. Know what she picked?

"Jumping bean."

This was a situation where my parents had to override her judgment. And if they wouldn't, I would. That name was unacceptable and stupid and we all knew it except for her.

Thankfully, after a long talk, we picked out another name. George. Acceptable. Worked out fairly well.

Keep trying. Don't give up. It will set eventually. Maybe even reward him with something for coming up with such a great name.

when my wife and I get two Doberman's, we're naming them Murtough & Riggs.

or, if we get a single female we're naming her Penelope.

I like the name Hugo though.

Really, the dog can be both. There's like 3 different names we call our dog. We gave her one, but I call her, "Crazy" half the time and "Loony". She doesn't seem to care or mind. She responds to them all.

If i ever have a daughter i think i'd wanna name her Penelope.

Or Raven. I really like name Raven for a girls name. Of course my woman disagrees, but i figure she'd be too drugged up to notice after she gives birth.
