A Pet Naming Quandary

We're getting a new dog and are arguing about names.

My boys (5 and 7) have both settled on the name Chief.

It is wrong of me to not want this name for our new dog because I see it as something of an ill omen for the dog at this point. Is this how far we've sunk?

I'm still pushing for Hugo (a local restaurant, Hugo's, plays a significant role in our family's lives).

Should I just make peace with Chief as a name and have confidence that the pall hanging over the franchise has finally been lifted?

I don't really want to say to the kids, "Listen boys. The Chiefs suck. We don't really want to name our dog after a shitty team do we?"

Funny you should say that. I was thinking they could name him Chief Scoots on Rug. Or Chief Shitting String. He could have a new name every day!

My buddy's kid want to name his dog Toot-Toot (pronounced Tewt-Tewt). They settled on Ruby.

sometimes I do like dogs that are named after a 'real' type of person name.
George
Walter
Tommy
Sheldon

etc. no idea why. I think it's because i always browse the adoption sites, and some of the names crack me up while read them and looking at their pictures.

Hah. One of my friends had a cat named "Keith." It was hilarious for some reason.

All in all, though, I think animals should have the same names as humans.

My uncle once had a basset hound named Norman. The sad eyes and the droopy jowels were just hilarious with that name for some reason

i think they'd make good shortened names too; only use their full names when they're in trouble lol

Easy,

Chief Hogo. Most dogs learn to respond to more than one name and largely it depends on the tone of voice more than the actual words used. Get him used to both names and everyone is happy.
