Breaston sees bigger opportunity with new Chiefs regime

Breaston sees bigger opportunity with new Chiefs regime

Steve Breaston will turn 30 this summer, and thatís the age at which the skills of many wide receivers decline. He is coming off his worst NFL season, one in which he spent plenty of time anchored on the bench.

But Breaston said Friday he is so energized by the change at head coach from Romeo Crennel to Andy Reid that he can see a bright future for himself with the Chiefs.

ďI do,Ē Breaston said Friday at Central High School, where through his Steve Breaston Foundation he presented a new iPad to each of the 10 winners of an essay-writing contest.

ďIíve never gotten down on myself. Itís a new opportunity so things can change for me. Itís all up to me and what I do on the field. I feel good about (Reid) being here. My big thing is to just show him my work. I feel like thereís a clean slate right now. Iím looking forward to (off-season practice).Ē

The Chiefs could certainly use a bounce-back season from Breaston, who had 1,000-plus yards for Arizona in 2008 and as recently as 2011 caught 61 passes with the Chiefs. Their best wide receiver, Dwayne Bowe, is a potential unrestricted free agent, though the Chiefs could re-sign him or otherwise retain him by designating him as their franchise player.

Otherwise, their receiving group is a collection of underachieving players, led by Jon Baldwin and Dexter McCluster. Other than Bowe, Breaston is the most accomplished of the bunch, though last season he practically disappeared.

Breaston played in just 10 games, started only four and caught seven passes, the lowest total of his career.

Reid saw the decline in Breastonís numbers last season. But Breaston left a lasting impression during a 2008 game between the Cardinals and Eagles, then coached by Reid. Breaston caught six passes and scored a touchdown that day.

ďIím familiar with Steve because we played against him a bunch of times,Ē Reid said. ďI know two years ago he had a good year numbers-wise and this year he was down a bit. Weíll see how things work out for him, but I know that as a slot receiver he was always dynamite against us. Thatís a unique skill to have. He had a nice knack for that, but I just didnít see that much from him last year, didnít see him in that spot.Ē

Breaston said he was also puzzled by his lack of participation last season as a slot receiver. The Chiefs mainly used Baldwin and Bowe as the starters and McCluster as the slot receiver, leaving little work for Breaston.

ďIt was kind of odd,Ē Breaston said. ďI played the slot position my first year here. I didnít get a down in the slot last year. I canít explain it. Nobody explained it to me.Ē

Breaston also had no explanation for his relative lack of playing time last season. When the Chiefs used extra receivers, they often turned to young players Jamar Newsome and Devon Wylie instead.

ďI still donít know what happened last year,Ē Breaston said. ďI canít put a finger on it. Nobody ever said anything to me. I know that one thing I did was work hard every day. My teammates saw me working hard every day. I did what I needed to do.

ďBut last year was last year. As difficult as last year was, thatís in the past. Now itís a fresh start and Iím looking forward to that. Iím going to take advantage of that. Iíve already talked with (new receivers coach David) Culley. I got a feel for what they expect. Itís a new opportunity for me.Ē

Breaston came up with the idea to purchase iPads for inner-city students last year. Initially, he planned to present one new iPad for every 100 of his 2012 receiving yards.

But he had just 74 yards.

ďThat didnít work out but I wanted to do this regardless,Ē he said. ďKids that work hard deserve to have certain tools to help them boost their creativity. This way, theyíre not limited in what they do.

ďHopefully it will make their classes and their lives easier.Ē

you can be the "slot" guy and be a teams FIRST or SECOND read in an offensive set making the WR2 actually the WR3.

I'm saying when he was in Arizona he was the the 3rd WR. Maybe he didnt work the slot, and that was for Boldin, or Fitz and he lined up at WR2, but he was still the 3rd WR read and the 3rd WR on the depth chart, even though he didnt play the slot.

He was a 2nd WR once in his career and that was 2 years ago when he caught 61 balls for us and McCluster/Baldwin were even more useless than they were this last season.

He was a very effective no 2 in Arizona as well...

No. 1, no. 2, and no. 3 are not positions. X, Y, and Z are positions. Split end, flanker, and slot.

He was not a 'number two' WR. He played Split end in 3 WR formations and Boldin usually moved over into the slot.

If you're going to grade guys as 1, 2, and 3, then do so by playing time. In that regard he would have been a #3 WR. There are already multiple ways to reference the specific WR position they're playing and none of them are numbers.

After boldin left he was a decent 2nd option and incredibly good 3rd option. I like Breaston. It's not worth thinking about why he wasn't playing, because there is no sane reason.

I really hope this guy is able to stick, he deserves it, even now that he can he STILL isnt slamming anyone, he's been a great soldier every step of the way... i respect that.

He's been highly productive when given the chance, has played in the super bowl... he knows how to play this game on AND off the field.

Give'em hell Stevie.

I e-mailed my one source about Breaston a while ago trying to find out why he wasn't playing. The FO or Romeo did never tell him a legit reason. They kept saying we want to see what we have in "this guy" or that guy. However, the source seemed to indicate that Breaston didn't take kindly to Daboll at all and told him during training camp that he was never being given a legit chance to compete with Baldwin and was in the dog house ever since. Pioli was definitely cutting him this off-season if he was still around.

On the Baldwin note, this was a 100% Pioli pick. I asked the source who else was in contention to get taken. The scouts input and Haley all wanted to take Kaepernick.

Chiefs worked out and spent a lot of time with Kaepernick prior to that 2011 draft.

Pioli was so god damn awful it just can't be overstated.

I was fooled in the beginning. Just should have looked at his drafting history to realize how ****ing awful he was.

Look at how the Patriots draft now. Complete 180 from the Pioli drafts.

Yes and no.

Romeo and Daboll weren't smart enough to know how to use this guy. The coaching staff did some of the talent no favors. Hell, in games we should have run Jamaal 25 times, they'd give him 8 touches.

I'm just glad Pioli is gone.

and people wonder why I hate Jon Baldwin so much

he literally set the team back 3 or 4 years by himself. It was so obvious putting the pieces together of buying into all the training camp propaganda released about him and then watching him in real NFL games that it was one big giant fraud of an advertisement to try and keep fans at bay. And it was spawned by Pioli to get the word and hype out about one of his draft picks so he can have an excuse to give him a free pass on the depth chart even though he's about as raw of a first round pick at WR as Tim Tebow is at QB.

that goes both ways with that coaching staff.

some games they gave him 8 touches when they should have gave him 20

and others they gave him 30 touches when they should have gave him 20

they ran him into the ground, almost to the point where they shaved a couple years off his career just for a losing season. The coaches almost ruined him.

Granted that clown show wasnt creative enough to mine his running ability, but even just as a pocket passer Kap is light years ahead of anything we've had in almost forever.

well if Todd Haley wanted him then it would have been Todd Haley's development not RAC and Daboll.

but Scooter ruined of all that, but yes RAC and Daboll have no idea what they are doing about anyone, and even set the careers back of in prime players as well, that's how useless they are at development
