For people who live around/have traveled to U.S.-Mexican border
Is it safe to say that, from the perspective of a Midwesterner or a New York/East Coaster, it does not look like America?

I've never been there. But that's my impression.

I have in San Antonio, but I don't consider that the borderland. That's the farthest south I've ever been (aside from Florida).

This is silly. The landscape doesn't change just because of the border. It is still a dry and arid desert mostly just like it is on our side.

I'm thinking of the culture, architecture, commerce, and not so much the geography variance between El Paso and Cuidad Juarez. Suppose I've lived in New York City, Des Moines, IA, and Seattle Washington all my life, and I've never watched anything about the border. Now suppose that I get on a plane and travel to El Paso/Cuidad Juarez. How shocked am I going to be?

When I was in San Diego, they had Mexican restaraunts. Can you believe it? Whole restaraunts dedicated to Mexican food. The strange thing was all the people cooking in the kitchen were white people.

The difference between El Paso and Juarez is beyond description. A very close friend of mine is from Juarez. She still owns a house and a couple of properties there.

The house literally has dirt floors that you sweep out with a push broom to keep them smooth and packed. The public buses have live farm animals on them. It's nothing to see someone bring several chickens on board. Oh...and don't forget the tanks rolling through the streets. There's that, too.

Tijuana is beyond description. Every crazy stereotype you've ever heard is true x 10. It's literally impossible to wrap your mind around it if you've never experienced anything outside the US.

Tijuana is less than 20 miles from San Diego.

Good, that's helpful information. So I take it you would say El Paso "looks like America." My idea was that El Paso would look more like Juarez than the rest of America.
