VARSITY
I worked my ass off for years at minimum wage. It sucks.

His statement that anyone who works 40 hours a week shouldn't live in poverty is a noble goal but in the real world I doubt its going to happen.

Every time they raise the minimum wage tons of people lose jobs.

It's a really bad idea right now.

Actually honestly I don't care what minimum wage is. No matter what they raise it to and frankly they could raise it to $50 per hour and it would make no difference.

Why? Because if you're being paid minimum wage it means the value of your job is negligible. Before this era that was not a big deal. There wasn't something that could replace your labor.

The problem is now there is, and it's getting MUCH MUCH cheaper by the hour. What is certain to wipe out the middle class has NOTHING to do with wages. It's automation, machines keep getting cheaper and processes keep getting more capable.

Lets pick fast food companies. They already don't really 'cook' your food in most places it's microwaved. So why do they have someone there to take your order? Make the labor more expensive and how much longer will it be before your order is taken by a fast food 'vending' machine. It'll start with a side by side offering to have a person take your order or a vending machine 'self checkout'. As people become familiar with the devices and more people use them they will replace the people component.

This is the problem. Wages won't matter, if a machine can do the job they will. I have always said if you know how to do your job a machine can do it for you. Unpredictability and creativity. Those are talents we can't program into machines....yet. If you want to adapt to this world you need to be willing to tear apart your education system to prepare for this world. The problem is....in the US...special interests rule...and there are too many special interest that want to avoid change to our educational system. SO it never will.

In short we're ****ed....we likely will only start to change AFTER the bomb has gone off. I would only expect unemployment to increase even as the economy improves.

Contrary to popular belief even 'growth' job markets aren't safe. Machines are already taking offloading many tasks that nurses and doctors used to do. Even technology isn't safe. Many if not most of the tasks done today by programmers are entirely automatable.

Hell look at wall street the definition of 'high' paying jobs. How many of those jobs are being replaced by automated trading machines?

This isn't about high paying or low paying. This is about the future of the society and if you aren't preparing for it you're going to be ****ed. Automation isn't just coming...it's here and we better start dealing with it now!

Well last time they stepped-up and reminded him that he's lies, many on the left got pissed off. So don't you agree that, for the the left and Obama, that the right refraining from speaking the truth publicly was welcome?

This is partly about the minimum wage, but also partly about union wages that are tied to the minimum wage. The democrat party gots to keep them blue collar teachers and government clerks happy.

I'd like to think that raising the minimum wage would encourage people to get jobs since it'd actually be worth more than the government support they get and thus we'll be more productive as a nation. I understand too that this hurts companies as well though, so it's a fine ground and it's tough to say what's right.
