Tim Tebow is about to make the biggest mistake of his life.

Tebow has agreed to speak at a hateful Baptist preacher's church, an evangelical cretin named Robert Jeffress who does the work of the Lord sort of like Westboro Baptist in Topeka, Kan., does the work of the Lord.

Not at all.

Jeffress isn't as bad as Westboro. He doesn't send his flock to funerals of U.S. soldiers and have his sheep yell awful things like, "God hates pillowbiters." But he comes close. Too close. He believes, he has said, "It's a fact that [AIDS is] a gay disease so there's a reasonable reason to exclude gays from the military."

Jeffress is a bad guy. He says Jews and homosexuals are going to hell. He says the Catholic church is a satanic cult. He says Islam "is a religion that promotes pedophilia -- sex with children."

Mormons? They're going to hell, too, but Jeffress was willing to overlook that and promote Mitt Romney over Barack Obama in the 2012 presidential election because Obama, Jeffress said, "is paving the way for the future reign of the Antichrist."

"I am not saying that President Obama is the Antichrist, I am not saying that at all," Jeffress said in November. "One reason I know he's not the Antichrist is the Antichrist is going to have much higher poll numbers when he comes."

Tim Tebow supports this man.

More than supports him, Tebow is going to throw his weight -- and it is considerable; we're talking about Tim Tebow for God's sake -- behind this preacher by speaking at his church in Dallas in April.

His view on Catholics might be a bit extreme, but I am talking about his basic message: If you don't believe in Jesus as savior, etc., you are going to hell. This is mainstream, traditional Christian belief. But it generally isn't criticized unless someone is caught on tape or actually quoted as saying, "Jews are going to hell." That's because a lot of people don't understand what they "believe" themselves, and non believers definitely don't understand.

The difference is in how the message is spread and people presenting themselves as wanting to help someone or do some good (i.e. keep them from going to hell or talking about the positives of God and Christianity) versus griping and fear-mongering (saying people will burn in Hell, opposing everything, etc)

I know people who claim to be devout Christians, but they maintain the "there are many paths to heaven" thing. Well, if they think one doesn't need to embrace Jesus to get there, are they truly Christian? I don't think that they know that they are SUPPOSED to believe one has to embrace Jesus to make the cut. Or maybe they are just trying to humor me and don't want to admit that they think I'm going to hell. In that case, I'm offended that they aren't trying to save me. Jerks.

I've seen a lot of preachers do their thing, and there is a way to do it without saying, "You're going to Hell." I was raised Independent Southern Baptist. It's Evangelical Fundamentalist Christian. I attended the Boulevard Baptist Church in Richmond, Virgina with my grandparents. Our pastor was James Bond, a retired pro boxer. He preached and taught from the Bible using his personal understanding of (what he considered) the Word of God. He was very much a "fire and brimstone" preacher and yet was about as humble a man as you would ever meet. It was his way to teach that from our understanding it could be assumed that an unsaved sinner would go to Hell, but that you and I could never actually know another man's heart, that judgement of a man's soul was for God and God alone.

Yeah, lol, there was a write up in the paper about him. He would joke around and put up his dukes and the kids loved the whole "Reverend 007" thing. He wouldn't say, "You're going to Hell." He would say, "I live this way because I want to go to Heaven and be with God. I believe that if I don't accept Christ as my personal savior then I am going to Hell. I want to teach you why I believe this way because Christ made a difference in my life and I want to share that incredible story with you. I don't understand what's so bad about Jeffress (or Tebow speaking at his church). I disagree with Jeffress on pretty much everything, but isn't it pretty common and understandable for someone from one religion to believe people from other religions aren't going to make it into heaven?
