Missouri Gun Rights Jumps the Shark

A Missouri state senator has introduced legislation that would make it illegal for his colleagues to propose gun safety laws.

The Springfield News-Leader reported on Monday that state Rep. Mike Leara’s (R) proposal, HB 633, would make any lawmaker who introduces legislation that “further restricts the right of an individual to bear arms, as set forth under the second amendment of the Constitution of the United States” guilty of a Class D felony.

“I filed HB 633 as a matter of principle and as a statement in defense of the Second Amendment rights of all Missourians,” Leara said in a statement to Talking Points Memo on Tuesday. “I have no illusions about the bill making it through the legislative process, but I want it to be clear that the Missouri House will stand in defense of the people’s Constitutional right to keep and bear arms.”

Leara introduced his proposal less than a week after the introduction of two gun-control bills: HB187, which would require all firearm sales go through a licensed dealer, and HB 545, a ban on assault weapons.

State Rep. Stacey Newman (D) made fun of Leara’s proposal on Twitter on Monday, writing, “Counting on you all visiting me in prison re my background ck bill. Not @TheOnion (sic)”

Missouri state law stipulates that Class D felonies are punishable with a jail term of up to four years, though judges have the ability to impose a “special term” of a year or less.

Yesterday Missouri State Representative Stacey Newman (D-St. Louis County) filed HB1853, which would only allow a man to have a vasectomy when doing so would protect him from serious injury or prevent his death.

Ah, the legislation's on the other set of genitalia now.
Rep. Newman -- whom I'd like to nominate for Hero Squad right here and now -- has been frustrated with the recent political debates over birth control access and reproductive health. The legislation is her pointed way of combating the idea that family planning is something only women have to worry about.

If passed, HB1853 will insure that vasectomies will only be performed in medical facilities licensed by the Department of Health and Senior Services, such as a hospital, ambulatory surgery center or similarly designated health facility. Vasectomies will be legal and safe, and the back-alley ballsnipper that so many indigent men are forced to seek out when they want to get their junk switched off will become a thing of the past. For too long, men have butchered themselves using weed-whackers, small chainsaws and footballs to the groin so that they could no longer father children they didn't want to be a father to. HB1853 will bring us to a more enlightened age.

Also, it could conceivably cause one of those right-wing bible-fondlers who are so certain that they have the authority to dictate what women can do with their bodies to choke on both indignation and irony. Bitter, bitter irony.

In the particular case of this article, the problem was neither. The problem was an ambitious legislator who saw an opportunity to pander to a particular group, who is clearly in the majority, by introducing useless legislation for the sole purpose of political gain.

That should be the felony and it should be enforced by castration with a piece of paper while salt is being sprinkled down.

Yeah, I get that he's making a point he thinks needs to be made. I guess I'm just over this entire topic. All of it seems so blown out of proportion to me. "Should we go afte the guns, or the crazy people? Guns, becasue they won't sue us!"
