Depends on who you were quoting at the time.

I wasn't a big Matt Ryan fan then, and I'm not now either, but I'd still take him 10 times out of 10 over Long.

Possibly, but the point being "safe" picks don't win you a lot of games. And when your team has a smoking crater at one position, AKA the Chiefs' QB depth chart, you have to draft the best player available.

Nice analysis here of the QB inflation.

Quote:
Yes, absolutely on the QB grades. It’s a little unfair, but we saw the same thing with defensive tackles the year after Ndamukong Suh and Gerald McCoy were taken in the top three. But we also saw this in 2004 after Manning, Rivers and Roethlisberger were picked. For the next couple of years, QBs will be compared to Luck, RG3, Tannehill and Russell Wilson (not so much Brandon Weeden).

I’ve used the Bradford comparison for Smith. Like Bradford, I think Smith will have to be put in the right situation to succeed. I’m not sure Bradford has been put in that spot. One thing to remember about Smith is that he’s been throwing to Stedman Bailey since high school. How has that helped his play? How will it negatively hurt him going forward? Wait, I’m not supposed to be asking questions here!

To succinctly answer your question, they’ll be skewed this year, but things will settle next year. Then Teddy Bridgewater will re-raise the bar in 2014. Book it.

No. He threw a lot of picks his senior year. There were just as many questions about him as there are with Geno, but unlike Geno, he did not have to follow a once in a lifetime qb class and he's white.

Pros: Has good size and a quick trigger which makes him a natural pocket passer. Has a good arm with good zip and capable of making every throw. Has nice mobility and does a good job when he’s working outside the pocket as a passer on rollouts and bootlegs. Has good accuracy and knows how to put the ball in a position where receiver can best make the play. Shows good smarts and awareness and does a nice job anticipating throws and reads. Is a natural leader that thrives in competitive situations which is why he does some of his best work late in games as well as in the no-huddle offense. Also doesn’t get easily rattled against the blitz. Understands accountability which only drives his competitive nature and desire to improve.

Cons: Situational awareness needs to be more consistent and has room to improve. Will at times give up on a play too early, showing a lack of trust in his supporting cast. But at other times will show too much trust when he forces passes into double and triple coverage. Doesn’t have a howitzer-sized arm, meaning he won’t be able to throw the ball on a frozen rope 40 yards downfield off his back leg across his body. That means he needs to rely on a consistent footwork and mechanics in the pocket more than other top quarterbacks. Which means that pressure can be a bit more effective against him than others if he’s not allowed to step into his throws. Needs to improve touch and accuracy on deep throws, as well as a willingness to challenge downfield.

I read that report and I think, "That's a #1 overall pick kind of QB in any normal draft year." The pros touch on all the important points, and the cons are all easily fixable things that will come with experience and/or hard work on the practice field and in the film room with coaches. And Geno has that nasty chip-on-his-shoulder work ethic that make improving on those cons a possibility.

Sign me up for that shit.

Matt Ryan should have gone #1 overall in that draft. I would have certainly done it if I were the Dolphins.

The cons threw me. I have never seen Geno Smith give up on a play too early. I'm sure it happens, but what made me fall in love with him as a prospect was his extension of plays.

Jake Long vs. Matt Ryan

-- AND --

Luke Jokel vs. Geno Smith

Hmmm...is this really a tough choice given recent history?
