Johnson dropped 20 in the final 5:32, which was more than his previous season high of 18. His 12 points in overtime alone would have matched his best effort in Big 12 play. His 39 points were more than his last four games combined.

Thirty-nine points from the man who went 9-for-37 in KU’s three straight Big 12 losses.

Then, it felt like that unbelievable title streak was nearing its end. Now, the Jayhawks have a great chance to extend it.

“It’s a direct reflection of coach,” Johnson said back at Big 12 Media Day when asked about KU’s streak. “People who were doing that eight years ago are now doing it now. He’s still there. I feel like that has to mean something. He’s doing something right. I just appreciate the fact that he tries to shed the light on us and make it look like it’s us who’s doing it. When all of us know who it really is — the head honcho.”

On this night, sticking by Johnson paid off. Next month it will be Johnson who will determine whether the Jayhawks have another run in them or not. It’s almost inevitable. Self has no other choice but to stick by the streakiest player he has ever coached. KU will either live or die by Johnson in March.

And Johnson, willingly, will play scapegoat or hero.

With competent officiating, KU has a three possession lead down the stretch. But yeah, let's just focus on one bad call in a game of many because it was the last one of regulation.

There's no need to get overly-defensive about this. Sometimes the refs inexplicably blow a game-changing call that hands the game over to our team. It happens.

KU gets the benefit of calls all the time (particularly at home). I'm the first person to admit that. And while they got the benefit of a call at the end tonight, they did not get the benefit of the calls throughout the game. ISU did. Despite that hindrance, KU still managed to keep it close enough to get the benefit of that bad call at the end and close enough to have EJ take over the game down the stretch (to the point that it would matter). They were the better team tonight and deserved the win. Anybody who tries to suggest differently either didn't watch the game (it sounds like you didn't if you're just seeing the last play now), has an agenda against KU, or simply doesn't have a clue about anything they witnessed.

I also noticed that nobody is bitching about Johnson being fouled on the drive before the charge.....At the end of the day....KU made plays and ISU didnt....and bitching about the refs will never change that fact

I thought he was fouled before the charge as well live but I'd have to see it again to be sure.

After watching it for the 400th time, I'm OK with a no call. It probably should have been called something, but Niang bailed clear the **** out before contact and didn't affect the shot. The contact had virtually no bearing on the shot. EJ did brick it, but he was expecting contact. If Niang stays put and gets some contact instead of bailing clear the **** out, I think he gets the call. He's so much bigger than EJ, he would have affected the shot.

The hilarious thing is that nobody is bitching about the no call on Lucious jacking up EJ on the drive. That contact affected the play much more than Niang.

Yeah, cruddy call, but I'm OK with it. I'm so sick of these ****s bailing the **** out. The purpose of the call is to establish the position and catch a player out of control. That doesn't happen any more. It's just get close and flop like ****. That's bullshit. I think they should allow some more leeway on being "set" if the dude is out of control, but if the player is just going up, get the ****ing flops out of here.[/soapbox]
