I dnt care for venison either/YUK!

Hunters across Louisiana are outraged after state health officials ordered a rescue mission to destroy $8,000 worth of deer meat because venison is not allowed to be served in homeless shelters.

The Dept. of Health and Hospitals ordered the staff at the Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission to throw 1,600 pounds of donated venison in garbage bins – and then ordered then to douse the meat with Clorox – so other animals would not eat the meat.
“Deer meat is not permitted to be served in a shelter, restaurant or any other public eating establishment in Louisiana,” said a Health Dept. official in an email to Fox News.

I doubt they're being fed pig slop in a trough either.
I just found some comedy in the difference between how you describe eating venison, and the way I visualize it being served a a shelter.

Ultimately I agree, if you don't like the taste of the free food, you're welcome to buy something you feel tastes better.

In college, we had a roommate that would bring back deer sausage and steaks a couple times a year. We always considered it a treat.

Iowanian has absolutely nailed this thread, but I almost spit up coffee when I read this post.

I really hate to agree with Cosmo here, but I believe the problem is they cannot control where the meat is coming from, or how it was processed. We have a program in Nebraska similar to the one Iowanian is referring to in Iowa. With the deer population exploding (except this last year due to drought) it seems to make sense to find some way to allow this perfectly good and healthy meat to be served in shelters. I used to think it would be a good think to have a state sponsored hunt. You would have hunters register and they'd pick a certain amount. They would be allotted a certain number of tags and when you check in your deer, it would be taken at that time for processing at some licensed facility and the meat distributed accordingly, or something like that.

The problem as I see it is some guy might let some of that meat go rancid, or there will be a ton of bone fragments or they gutted it improperly and there is fecal matter in it, or what have you. I understand the concern, but there has got to be a way to do it. There is too much out there to let it all go to waste.

I can see how my post read that way. I guess I'm clouded because that's something we do at our office using a cheap grill and empty plastic butter tubs or on top of a wood stove in a garage.
