Neighborhood watch captain shoots innocent black youth and doesn't even get arrested

http://news.yahoo.com/family-florida...044537742.html

ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - The family of a 17-year-old African-American boy shot to death last month in his gated Florida community by a white Neighborhood Watch captain wants to see the captain arrested, the family's lawyer said on Wednesday.

Trayvon Martin was shot dead after he took a break from watching NBA All-Star game television coverage to walk 10 minutes to a convenience store to buy snacks including Skittles candy requested by his 13-year-old brother, Chad, the family's lawyer Ben Crump said.

"He was a good kid," Crump said in an interview, adding that the family would issue a call for the Watch captain's arrest at a news conference on Thursday. "On his way home, a Neighborhood Watch loose cannon shot and killed him."

Trayvon, who lived in Miami with his mother, had been visiting his father and stepmother in a gated townhome community called The Retreat at Twin Lakes in Sanford, 20 miles north of Orlando.

As Trayvon returned to the townhome, Sanford police received a 911 call reporting a suspicious person.

Although names are blacked out on the police report, Crump and media reports at the time of the shooting identified the caller as George Zimmerman who is listed in the community's newsletter as the Neighborhood Watch captain.

Without waiting for police to arrive, Crump said, Zimmerman confronted Trayvon, who was on the sidewalk near his home. By the time police got there, Trayvon was dead of a single gunshot to the chest.

"What do the police find in his pocket? Skittles," Crump said. "A can of Arizona ice tea in his jacket pocket and Skittles in his front pocket for his brother Chad."

Zimmerman could not be reached for comment on Wednesday evening at a phone number listed for him on the community's newsletter.

Crump said the family was concerned that police might decide to consider the shooting as self defense, and that police have ignored the family's request for a copy of the original 911 call, which they think will shed light on the incidents.

"If the 911 protocol across the country held to form here, they told him not to get involved. He disobeyed that order," said Ryan Julison, a spokesman for the family.

"He (Zimmerman) didn't have to get out of his car," said Crump, who has prepared a public records lawsuit to file on Thursday if the family doesn't get the 911 tape. "If he never gets out of his car, there is no reason for self-defense. Trayvon only has skittles. He has the gun."

Since Trayvon, a high school junior who wanted to be a pilot, was black and Zimmerman is white, Crump said race is "the 600 pound elephant in the room."

"Why is this kid suspicious in the first place? I think a stereotype must have been placed on the kid," Crump said.

Nothing at all wrong with asking 'what are doing here'?

Perfectly good reason to harass someone and kill them once they figured out you were a piece of shit looking for trouble.

Sure that is one possibility.....but they are going to have to PROVE it, which might be tough considering the only person's fists to have damage were TM's...

The scenario where TM throws a punch 1st and jumps on GZ is just as likely, is it not?

The better question is, why did zimmerman feel the need to follow him far from his car? And according to his account, in that long chase never said who he was or why he was following him. He didn't even address trayvon until they were face to face. Despite having plenty of opportunity, he never went back to his car. This we know based on his statements and reconstruction of events.

You are claiming to know what zimmerman said but nobody knows. We don't know if one of them was talking shit. We don't know who made a first move. What we know is trayvon beat the crap out of zimmerman and Zimmerman never in his account made it known that he wasn't some creepy stranger following him. I've already said trayvon is absolutely at fault for that. But at the same token... It is very hard to look at the reconstruction of events and not think that zimmerman wasn't trying to initiate a face to face conflict or be a hero and nab him red handed. There is no other explanation for why he would go that far into pursuit without announcing who he was, nor is there an explanation for why his statements seem to be wildly inconsistent.

Pretty sure its in this thread somewhere that he was indeed caught at school with stolen jewelry and a large screwdriver in his backpack, and it just so happens that the neighborhood experiencing a rash of break ins is the one he cut through frequently on candy runs.

Is there an outside chance he wasnt atleast partly responsible for those? sure, its possible... but more often than not 1+1 = 2.

Another clue i find interesting, is zimmermans testimony that while following martin he lost him in a large grassy area between buildings, that makes perfect sense, no way portly little zimmerman catches that kid if he didnt want to be caught... yeah, martin lost him, and if he'd just kept going instead of getting mad and circling back, this wouldnt have happened.

He could've just went home, but he chose not to... just my opinion, but it sure rings true to me.

If you are going to bring up trayvon's history, you should also mention that zimmerman had a history of being hot headed and strikes you as a guy who likes getting into people's faces and picking fights. So you have to buy into his testimony that he tried to walk away at the very, very last minute and when confronted by trayvon innocently said close to nothing.

The account makes it hard to believe he ever stopped pursuit as he claims in his statement. Or that he was walking back to his car. And as long as we are judging based on history, I find it hard to believe zimmerman didn't shit talk or pursue with the intent not necessarily to fight but maybe to fget in trayvon's face.

My memory of the details is a bit foggy, but how do we know that much of anything was said other than zimmerman asking him what he was doing there.

IIRC martin didnt mention much in the way of verbal confrontation when he was talking to his girl on the phone, just that a guy was following him and he was considering running.

If you look back at my first several posts i was full-on against zimmerman, but as the evidence trickled in, i felt i had no choice but to change my tune... i honestly think martin could've lost that guy no sweat by cutting through yards and jumping a fence or two, and that he DID lose him, but that pride got the best of him and he snuck back, thus pushing the situation off the cliff.

Or the fact a black kid fleeing through backyards may look suspicious which could cause issues. Also why should he have to run? Unless he had committed a crime why should he run? Some wannabe badass follows him around and gets out of his vehicle and confronts him after being told to stand down. Zimmerman may not have broken the law but he sure as hell ain't no hero~

Its a bit off track from your post, but i've been wondering about this gated community... would a place like that be considered private property meant only for those paying to live there? i'm wondering if the kid was trespassing by regularly cutting through there.

This nation will probably never call him a hero, but the other residents of that place were quite stalwart in his defense as i recall, i'm guessing they'd had enough of the break ins and were on edge about it.

I believe Florida Gated Communities are considered private which would include any walkways, street and sidewalks.
So permission would be needed to get in. It may be done differently in different areas.
