My conspiracy theory regarding North Korea.

If you've been following the news, there's been a lot of saber rattling near the 38th parallel in recent weeks. Looking at North Korea, I don't see any particular reason for this timing, but now we've got U.S. bombers circling over South Korea in holding patterns, and discussions about missiles aimed toward American targets.

Why? Why now?

Here's my conspiracy theory.

North Korea is working toward building a bomb, and they're working toward building missiles. Welcome to the club, but we don't want them in the club.

So take a look at North Korea. It's got a 29 year-old leader whose control is somewhat uncertain, a bunch of military leaders who are probably running the place, and an economy that is not exactly prosperous. They have a massive military, but the scuttlebutt is that they have one week's worth of fuel. After that, every piece of mechanized machinery shuts down.

It's pretty much a given that if they start a war, it'll be over in two weeks, and it won't end in North Korea's favor. Sure, they'll beat the hell out of Seoul and the rest of the south for a week, but do we Americans really mind seeing Hyundai and Kia plants in smoking rubble? And when it's all over, Kim Jong Un is going to be hiding in a plus-sized spider hole somewhere and there are going to be a lot of toppled Kim Il Sung statues. Democracy and capitalism will score a win, a nuclear rogue state will disappear, we'll get to remove the 'north' and 'south' from Korea, and we'll feel good about freeing a bunch of political prisoners and opening a McDonald's in Pyongyang.

Now, China is a bit of a wildcard, as we all remember from our M*A*S*H episodes. But from what we read, they're a bit fed up with North Korea now too, so it's possible that they could sit on the sidelines in this sequel.

So maybe the time is right to poke North Korea with a stick when nobody's looking. We get them all riled up, let them start something, and then pound them down with the troops that conveniently have been pulling out of the Middle East. No more missiles, no more nuclear threat, and hey, we didn't start it. All before they get the bomb.

What do you think?

I'd be pretty heavily in favor of going to China and seeing if we can't discuss a permanent solution to the problem. The only issue is that there's no way to give NK to SK without US boots on the ground in NK, which isn't very appealing.

You would think that China, at this point, would probably be ok with a unified Korea under South Korean control if they could get, say, all US bases removed from the peninsula. But they would bargain much harder -- try to get those islands that are disputed with Japan, for example or, comically, Taiwan.

So yeah, nothing will happen. Of course if NK launches any kind of attack, all bets are off.

North Korea has 200,000 troops under the ocean out of site. The problem is that after we think we have them whooped they pop up and nuc the west coast. That is unless they keep breaking the belt on their alternator.

Honestly I have never really thought of it before now but, perhaps the best outcome if hostilities were to ensue would be for China to rush in, Crush the north and then just make them a puppet. Kind of like Russia did with the Warsaw pact countries. They would be in everything but name a part of China. That would keep them under control and while the Standard of living in China does compare to the West, if North Korea could be raised to a similar level the average North Korean would think they had died and gone to heaven. China would have no realistic Fear of South Korea Starting a war with them and which would allow China to safely slash the size of the North Korean Armed forces. Once that happened the South Koreans would follow their lead with the result being a much safer stable situation.

I spend a lot of time in South Korea (many, many months over the last 15 years), and I mind. It is a lot more than Hyundai and Kia plants. It is a thriving, modern, and quite beautiful country. In many ways more modern than the US (fiber optic internet to every household in the nation, for example). When you see it as a real place, with real people, then you don't want to see it as "smoking rubble". Some pictures I've taken:

No it will not under any circumstances lift a finger to help us or SK. If NK strikes first it will not intervene but it will not help.

I've been telling you guys on this board since they skipped over the legitimate son and heir and found a bastard son to take over. He is a figurehead for the military. It's a good assumption that the announced son/heir was pushed aside after the "Dear Leaders" death and the bastard son put in his place because the "real" son/heir was going to rule the military and not the military rule the son.

This is all about the military having all the power and making sure it stays that way.

Missile technology and the ability to deliver a nuclear warhead with a missile are two different things. I think what you're talking about is the basic missile capability. What I'm talking about is the nuclear warhead delivery capability.

You are correct. I'm not saying they currently have the capability to deliver a nuke to Japan. Just a ballastic missile. But, I think we are looking at a year or two and then it will be possible if they keep getting help from Iran.

No, it seemed that Kim Jong Un was the only guy that wasn't a complete **** up. No matter who took over rule, they were going to be young and raw to take over, and the military was going to walk all over them.

No, they are still a joke. You are correct that they have improved by leaps and bounds though. At this stage they'd be INCREDIBLY lucky to hit Japan at all. Yes they have the raw range with a VERY few barely tested platforms but their guidance and warhead tech isn't even close. If they had more than a couple in this class (and they don't) they'd basically have to fire and pray that one hit anything other than ocean. They could of course pound the crap out of Seoul if they wanted to. BUT we have more than capable missile defense systems to handle that ... in theory... I have no clue if we have them deployed there in significant enough numbers to handle capacity.

Tough situation and one that may not get a resolution as long as we continue to be China's bitch in so many facets of foreign policy.
