IMF Proposes $1.40 a Gallon Gas Tax on US Drivers

March 29th, 2013

The national average for a gallon of gasoline is currently at $3.65. On top of that sky-high price, the International Monetary Fund has now proposed that the U.S. should impose a tax of $1.40 per gallon in order to pay for social programs around the world and help the environment.

I said he was an arrogant douche. That's not exactly the same as crying about it.

I 'll give credit though--what blessing he gave them seems to be working. I bow before Tebow.

The top 5 US oil companies profited over $62,000,000,000 last year. That's $341M dollars a day in profit. Yet consumers in a down economy with record unemployment and stagnent wages are expected to pay for environmental protection efforts by paying almost 40% more for gas.

Yeah that certainly makes sense...

Why aren't the oil and gas companies expected to contribute anything toward the environmental effects of their own product?

Well that's because the oil and gas industry spent $70M on government lobbying last year. $70 million dollars spent on influencing the government....

So do you blame them or the government...?

Both. But the government deserves more of the blame. The oil and gas industry is simply making money like a business is intended to do. The government though, has allowed these giant corporations to change the rules in exchange for money. The government should be looking out for the people. Instead, they're taking $70B in lobbying, and removing regulations and giving tax breaks that benefit the corporations and not the people.

The corporations aren't doing a damn thing to better the situation though. Instead of taking their insane record profits and investing in things that benefit the economy that they're raping, they're hoarding money into cash reserves, buying up their own stock, and spending to lobby the government for more tax breaks and less regulation. ExxonMobile spent 42% of their profits last year, on purchasing their own stock. ConocoPhilips spent 96% of their profits on their own stock buyback. Which is just crazy...

All the while, paying significantly less than the 35% corporate tax rate...

Quote:
Reuters reports that their tax payments were a far cry from the 35 percent top corporate tax rate. It reported that ConocoPhillips paid an effective federal tax rate of 18 percent last year. In addition, ExxonMobil paid 13 percent of its U.S. income in taxes after deductions and benefits in 2011, according to a Reuters calculation of securities filings. Chevron paid about 19 percent.

In addition to these relatively low federal income tax rates, these companies also benefit from tax breaks worth $24 billion over a decade, according to the Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation.

Yeah that certainly makes sense...

And not a single mention of the profit margin, which is the only pertinent figure. I realize that people like to focus on the big dollar figure which represents the profit, but it's rather disingenuous.

I think you need to check that $70 billion claim again.
