What I don't get is in the video it said the ATF or whatever gave them a license to sell...but since they plan on giving the tech away for free, maybe that's what's got the gubment in a twist.

I honestly don't know what can be done about this.

Our technology is approaching the point where you will be able to generate just about any kind of weapon remotely.

If there's anything that can be done about that, I'm at a loss.

The SMART choice is to plan for it NOW. Pushing for crap like better background checks is idiotic when they will be completely irrelevant in a few years (or 10 or 20 at most). Seems like the pro-gun crowd has been on the right track all along... address the REAL problems and quit focusing on the guns themselves.

The gun control debate is effectively over in my mind. Gun control lost.

BTW on a technical note... we are talking about CHEAP 3d printing. If I wanted to spend massive amounts of money on a laser sintering system I could print METAL guns right now. That same tech is about to take a massive leap forward toward consumer availability in 2015. At the same time the materials available for plastic 3d printing are become stronger and stronger. AND finally, as soon as you get some decent engineers involved (right now it's all just enthusiasts) you can make simple design changes that would move this whole process forward by leaps and bounds. All they are doing now is copying out dated designs based on cast metal parts. Completely ignores many of the advantages of being able to 3d print.

Actually the battle has been lost for some time now, people just haven't had as much of an 'in your face' to see how easily it's been lost.

A person can buy a basic 1K CNC machine and make as many lower receivers(which is the restricted 'firearm' part of a gun) for some time. Spend 10K-60K on a real CNC machine and you can build them faster and cheaper than before. What is the Gov going to do? Start arresting people for owning CNC machines and chunks of metal? Because that is all it takes to build a firearm.

The 3D printing just shows that it's even easier and cheaper than people realized.

The rise of microfactory technology will make prohibition effectively impossible. You see CNC machines and 3D printers talk about building things...but there are other microfactories coming too. It won't be long before we have computer control chemical synthesis microfactories too. Buy some base chemical elements and create any chemical you want.

Biofactories? They're coming too. Want to resequence the DNA of the bird flu so that it's more lethal or only infects those with specific genetic markers?(say those associated with one racial classification or another) Just plug in the changes to the machine and watch the new virus strain created.

That's the eventual future that should scare the shit out of people and really we're closer there than people might think. What are you going to do? Ban machines that can build other machines(either mechanical or biological?). Ban raw materials? Or do you want to ban information instead?

At some point we have to stop banning possession(because you're not going to stop criminals by banning 'possession') and start putting serious and heavy penalties on harmful USE. Because that's the real problem with all of this...there will always be tons of legitimate uses for the equipment...at the same time those who want to till be able to use it to build very very evil things.

That is the challenge our society will face and truth be told punishment based strategies will only be marginally effective. If you want to stop the highly intelligent but mentally disturbed you have to focus and spend time and money on general mental health.
