I don't think RTs confirm anything. People RT anything, including me, and nothing I tweet is of any value.
But if a news source tweets something you can look for backup almost instantly. And really the tweet by the news source often links to an article with more substance.

I love twitter as a way to quickly hear about news stories. I don't take it at face value, but it alerts me to start monitoring stories via more reliable sources when I might have been late to the party.
