The Chiefs are taking Geno #1; bank on it

Andy loves him some QBs. And KC has been a bottomless pit of QB suckage. While folks initially freaked out over the ASmith signing (me included), once they locked up Bowe and Albert, it seemed pretty clear that Geno will be the choice at #1.

People say you don't draft a QB #1 to sit on the bench, the first pick of the draft isn't a backup QB. They are right. They say ASmith will be the starter, especially given his compensation. They are right. Ummm, does that mean that Geno is being groomed for a year or two behind Alex? Not necessarily.

What? That is nonsense!

Only in the traditional sense.

I think Reid and Dorsey are thinking waaay outside the box on this one.

If (when) the Chiefs draft Geno, the whole idea of a "backup" QB will be shook up. "Backup" will be a matter of semantics. "Starting" will be a matter of semantics as well.

Reid and Dorsey both see the need for 2 "starting caliber" QBs on a team in today's NFL. San Fran proved beyond a shadow of a doubt last year that it really pays to have 2 QBs on your team who can start for you.

If one "starting caliber" QB goes down, you have another "starting caliber" QB ready to be plugged in and the team doesn't miss a beat.

It has been repeated ad nauseum on this board that the QB is the most important position in all of football. When you have an offense that is predicated on throwing the football 40+ times a game, you can't afford to have a dropoff in productivity should one of your QBs goes down for a time, otherwise your season is effectively over.

Reid and Dorsey get this.

As fans, especially Cheifs fans, we need to rethink our conceptions of "backup" and "starting" and realizing we are entering an era of "starting caliber" QBs.

We are being built to win.

We are being built to win even in the face of adverse contingencies.

We are going to win.

And I like it.

What a piece of shit. So glad we didn't take him.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-sh...171942405.html

West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith's fall out of the first-round of the 2013 NFL draft has claimed its first casualty as Liz Mullen of the SportsBusiness Journal reports that the rookie quarterback is parting ways with his agents, Jeff Nalley of the Houston-based Select Sports Group.

[Also: Tyrann Mathieu won't sign a contract without guaranteed money]

Smith accepted an invitation to attend the draft and was in the green room at Radio City Music Hall for most of the first-round. However, when the first-round reached the final few picks, and those picks were held by teams that have no need for a quarterback, Smith left the building as it was evident he would not be selected until Day 2.

ESPN's Suzy Kolber reported that Smith was not going to attend Day 2 of the draft, but Smith changed his mind and returned to Radio City Music Hall on Friday. Smith was selected by the New York Jets with the eighth pick in Round 2, the 39th overall pick in the draft, which is expected come with a contract worth just under $5 million with over $3.1 million in guaranteed money. Had Smith been selected in Round 1, his contract would be worth, at minimum, $6.7 million with around $5.4 million in guaranteed money.

The financial difference, as well as having to return to a green room for a second day, appear to be the reason why Smith is changing agents.

According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, Smith was under the impression that he should be and would be the No. 1 overall pick of the draft. It is understandable for Smith to be disappointed about not being a first-round pick, but unless he was specifically being told by his agents that he would go No. 1, we're not sure how they are at fault for his tumble out of Round 1.

[Also: Jets show disdain for Tim Tebow]

Smith was clearly aware of what "so-called experts" were saying about him, and if he were paying attention to mock drafts in the days leading up to the draft, he should have known that the Kansas City Chiefs' pick at No. 1 overall was going to be a left tackle, either Central Michigan's Eric Fisher (who was the pick) or Luke Joeckel from Texas A&M (who went No. 2 overall to the Jacksonville Jaguars). While Smith was a highly-regarded prospect during the lead-up to the draft — "Shutdown Corner" editor Doug Farrar had Smith as the No. 10 prospect in the "Shutdown 50" — where he was predicted to be picked was all over the map. Farrar had Smith going as high as seventh overall in his mock draft, while Greg Cosell did not have Smith being selected in Round 1 in his mock draft for "Shutdown Corner".

Per the NFLPA rules, Smith must wait five days before officially hiring a new agent.

Yeah, if the person managing my career and my money told me I was worth a 1st round pick and $15-$20 million guaranteed and it turned out i was only worth a 2nd round pick and $3-$5 million guaranteed, I'd love for him to manage the rest of my career!

Sperm bank of Geno has been redirected to New York.

And the butthurt on CP is amazing.

Can't wait for the "Geno was only a bust because he went to the Jets" threads.
