It's time we ban pitbulls

Enough is enough. These dogs are way too strong & unpredictable. Plus, they are normally owned by the wrong people. Deadly combo right there.

This latest pitbull attack is absolutely heartbreaking.

A 14-month-old Wisconsin boy has died after a brutal attack by a pair of pit bulls, authorities said on Thursday.
Police received a call from Susan Iwicki, 30, on Wednesday saying that she and the young boy were being attacked by the dogs, according to local NBC affiliate WMTV. Iwicki told police that she and the boy had each sustained injuries.

The boy died of his injuries at a Milwaukee area hospital later on Wednesday, the Walworth County sheriff’s office said, according to The Associated Press.
The boy had the “biggest eyes, great smile,” family friend Valerie Brylow told local affiliate WTMJ. “He was a great little boy.”
“He is adorable, absolutely adorable,” Nicole Jennison, another family friend told the station.
The boy’s name has not been released, and an investigation continues. Both of the pit bulls were removed from the property and euthanized on Wednesday, WMTV reported.
The fatal dog attack was the first in Wisconsin in a decade, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Always an interesting subject. Sad for the kid, but I'm not one to test the ownership of a Pitbull. I shared a Dobie with a girlfriend one time, and after a while it just wasn't worth it. Too much stigma from friends who knew she was was fine. She was a great guard dog, but never hurt a fly. I personally will never get another dog that's thought to be mean, it's just not worth it.

Now, the dog I have now is a mutt, and she's smarter than any of the many Labs, Ches-Bays, or the Dobie. And she is THE MOST LOVED DOG IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. Brought her out today, and within ten minutes, 4 8-year-old girls are brushing her! LOL, kids are awesome!

Not having that stigma is nice, but I respect those who love whatever breed they happen to love.

we're considering adopting an all white, femail bull terrier/pit. She's 2 years old, and deaf. we met with her for a good 1/2 hour in a play area.

we may schedule (once we decide if we want to adopt) a 'meet and great' with our other dogs to see how they interact (obviously).

she was the sweetest, most doscile dog - just like my femal lab mix. We adopted her (my lab) after the dog we wanted dominated my 1 year old pointer mix when he was just 5 months old. We introduced the lab to him, and they were like peas and carrots.

This is her

^^^ That dog will be the most loyal animal you've ever owned. We adopted a pit who had been with two other owners. He was the best animal friend I've ever had, and it wasnt even close.

Great looking dog- hope you get her.

There is typically a story every week or so about a pitbull attacking a child in Eastern Iowa. It's crazy.

You'd think by now the pit bull would have finished off that child.

Knock it off with your bite strength bullshit.
You are right. I was wrong about that. Apparently it's pretty comparable to that of a german shepard and much less than a mastiff.

I never said I never associated with them, nor have I said I've never had one as a pet. They can make great pets just like any dog.

I'm criticizing people who abuse them and people who breed them for the purpose of creating mean dogs.. you know.. by culling the less aggressive ones. I'm not sure why that should bother you... unless you abuse animals or breed fighting dogs.

I heard a suggestion that pit bull owners should be required to carry insurance for them. The idea was that it would still allow people who want to own them the option, while discouraging the casual and/or careless owner, and allowing for compensation for people hurt by them.

What do you guys think? Would that be an effective compromise?

The thing is, according to this article, Pits account for less than 5% of the dog population in the USA (2011) but account for 71% of bite fatalities. The article itself has some pretty interesting stats by the numbers. Here's a chart:

The rest of the info here:

http://www.dogsbite.org/dog-bite-sta...ities-2011.php

Quote:
2011 dog bite fatalities ::

Information gathered by DogsBite.org is verifiable1 through Internet archive services. Our Fatality Citations section documents each source used in our dog bite-related fatality research.
2011 statistics2

31 U.S. fatal dog attacks occurred in 2011.3 Despite being regulated in Military Housing areas and over 600 U.S. cities, pit bulls led these attacks accounting for 71% (22). Pit bulls make up less than 5% of the total U.S. dog population.4

Notably in 2011, adult victims of fatal pit bull attacks more than doubled the number of child victims. Of the 22 total pit bull victims, 68% (15) fell between the ages of 32 to 76, and 32% (7) were ages 5 years and younger.

The year 2011 also marks an increase in pet pit bulls killing their owners. Of the 8 total instances this year in which a family dog inflicted fatal injury to its primary caretaker, the dog's owner, 88% (7) involved pet pit bulls.

Together, pit bulls (22) and rottweilers (4), the number two lethal dog breed, accounted for 84% of all fatal attacks in 2011. In the 7-year period from 2005 to 2011, this same combination accounted for 74% (157) of the total recorded deaths (213).

The breakdown between pit bulls and rottweilers is substantial over this 7-year period. From 2005 to 2011, pit bulls killed 128 Americans, about one citizen every 20 days, versus rottweilers, which killed 29; about one citizen every 88 days.

Annual data from 2011 shows that 58% (18) of the attacks occurred to adults (21 years and older) and 42% (13) occurred to children (11 years and younger). Of the children, 62% (8) occurred to ages 1 and younger.

2011 data also shows that 39% (12) of the fatal incidents involved more than one dog; 26% (8) involved breeding on the dog owner's property either actively or in the recent past, and 6% (2) involved tethered dogs, down from 9% in 2010 and 19% in 2009.

Dog ownership information for 2011 shows that family dogs comprised 65% (20) of the attacks that resulted in death; 74% (23) of all incidents occurred on the dog owner's property and 29% (9) resulted in criminal charges, up from 15% in 2010.

The states of California and Texas led fatalities in 2011, each with 4 deaths; pit bulls and their mixes contributed to 88% (7) of the 8 deaths. North Carolina, New Mexico, South Carolina and Virginia each incurred 2 deaths.

See: 7-Year U.S. Dog Bite Fatality Chart (2005 to 2011)

for what it's worth...These are just raw numbers.
