Rays pitcher Alex Cobb had 13 Ks in 4.2 IP

However, he's in line to lose on a balk and just got pulled. First time all season a Rays starting pitcher didn't go at least 5 IP

Impressive? In a sense.

Yes, he struck out all those batters in under five innings, but he also through nearly 120 pitches, put a lot of unnecessary wear and tear on his arm, and pretty much screwed their bullpen due to his high pitch count and having to be pulled early.

Sometimes it's better to pitch to contact, spot your pitches, and let your defense play behind you. If you happen to rack up some K's along the way, great!

There's a reason the best pitchers in baseball don't typically strike out 15-20 a game . . . . they know how to pitch.

.. or the reason the best pitchers don't typically strike out 15-20 is because that is extremely difficult to do no matter your approach.

Fair enough. I'll strike typically from the record.

But the point remains the same; use your defense behind you and don't kill your bullpen.
