MSNBC on IRS Scandal : THIS IS TYRANNY...

MSNBC host Joe Scarborough tore into the federal government over the Internal Revenue Service’s targeting of conservative groups.

In addition to calling the admitted actions “mind-boggling,” the personality highlighted the assertion that “this government is using the Internal Revenue Service to target people with whom they disagree.” Others, like co-host Willie Geist, jumped in to say that the collective actions constitute ”tyranny.”

“When it comes to political speech, it’s sacrosanct. Our founding fathers meant for it to be sacrosanct,” Scarborough said, going on the lambaste the IRS. “Liberal and conservative Supreme Courts alike do not allow the government to tread on political speech. There is a wall around that, and the wall has been knocked down by the IRS for several years now.”

Geist mirrored these sentiments, as did other “Morning Joe” panelists and co-hosts. While he noted that other claims about the government coming after guns have been overblown, the threat to free-speech posed by the IRS in this instance, in Geist’s view, is a true government-led assault.

“There’s been many overblown claims of tyranny and abuse of power from the government over the last few years. We’ve heard those. We’re coming for your guns — that kind of thing,” he said. “This is tyranny. If this is the government, a nonpartisan agency coming after specific groups, this time it’s real.”

Scarborough also called for Obama to “fire people” and to come out condemning the “unspeakable” actions of the IRS in the harshest terms possible. Rather than sitting back and ignoring the scandal, he implored the president to demand answers.

the people who we vote for are hand picked by the elite, the people who own us. So really, we don't deserve it.

They pick out the people who will follow their orders and that's the people who we get to vote for.

and if you wanna use that argument. We didn't deserve Bush in 2000. Gore was the President elect. Which should be proof how little anyone's vote actually matters.

Believing that some elite group controls or owns you is such a pathetic and sad way to live life. I has to lend itself to failure.

Lobbyists choose our candidates, their policies, and in many cases even write the talking points to their speeches. Then we are given a choice from their chosen.

People have power in state and local governments, but at the federal level we might as well be ants.

Dumb. The two essentially tied, within 1/2 of 1% of the vote. At that level you can't even be sure of who won anyway. It was a split decision. Bad example.

Obama’s Cronkite moment
Did the president lose Jon Stewart -- and his millennial base -- last night?
BY ALEX SEITZ-WALD

If President Obama has lost Jon Stewart, has he lost his base? It’s a question worth considering after the Daily Show host tore into the president Monday night for a series of scandals and controversies that seem to piling up by the hour this week. In a shouty, expletive-laden segment, Stewart said, said the IRS scandal will be fodder to the right-wing conspiracy theories he’s been battling for years and that it single handily “shifted the burden of proof from the tin foil-behatted to the government:”

“Well, congratulations, President Barack Obama, Conspiracy theorists who generally can survive in anaerobic environments have just had an algae bloom dropped on their f–king heads, thus removing the last arrow in your pro-governance quiver: skepticism about your opponents.”

By the time Stewart got around to the Department of Justice taking AP reporters’ phone records, he couldn’t even muster the energy for outrage, mumbling blankly “mother f–cker.”

Stewart, more than any other broadcaster or political figure, has become a voice for the millennial generation and a conduit for its political awakening in the Obama era. Stewart has never withheld criticism for the president, but the tone is usually like that of a comedic roast, ribbing but generous, or the kind of sober, but compassionate warning a friend may give about about the need to shape up. But Stewart’s performance last night suggests the host is losing his patience with the president. Could his viewers and a core constituency of the Obama base be not far behind him?

It calls to mind one of the most famed moments in broadcasting, when CBS News legend Walter Cronkite delivered an editorial opinion after the Tet Offensive in February 1968 saying, “It is increasingly clear to this reporter that the only rational way out then will be to negotiate, not as victors, but as an honorable people who lived up to their pledge to defend democracy, and did the best they could.”

Apparently watching at the White House, President Johnson, who had lost the left long ago, reportedly turned to an aide and said, “If I’ve lost Cronkite, I’ve lost Middle America.” Just a few weeks later, Johnson announced he would not seek reelection. (Critics say the event has been widely misreported and overblown, but it still looms large in the American consciousness of the era, even if apocryphally.)

Obama can’t seek reelection anymore, of course. But he lost the Right long ago, and one wonders if at least some segments of his base may be losing patience as well, as the latest scandals on transparency and freedom of the press strike nerves close to the progressive heart. If George W. Bush targeted AP reporters, or systematically went after liberal groups, the left would be justifiably outraged (and was).

Meanwhile on CNN, Piers Morgan, who is also usually quite friendly to the president and willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, said Obama’s failures on transparency is America “at its worst.”

“Four months into a fresh four years, President Obama is already assuming the familiar crouch of a scandal-struck second-termer,” Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank wrote today.

Closed your file, as in "Never mind the money you owe and any interest and penalty"? I kind of doubt that.

I walked out of that meeting with a new white hot disgust for the IRS...and the feds in general.
I have no idea what your particular circumstances were, but they are pretty much just following the rules that Congress hands down.

Unless you're just filing an EZ form, the different treatments for various types of income and the huge number and/or complexity of available deductions make it either very easy to cheat or to simply make a mistake.

good thing Bush had his brother in office in florida to sway the vote. I don't see how thats a bad example? Your votes do not matter. The people do not matter.

OK, my wife was running a daycare out of the house. Which means we had to file a schedule C. We had receipts for food that she bought for the daycare. In the opinion of the asshole IRS auditor, we weren't really using all the food for daycare, but probably for our own consumption. His OPINION. I had receipts with the foods highlighted that we used for the daycare, it wasn't like the whole receipt. He asked for proof, I provided it, and he decided on a whim that it wasn't enough proof. To be fair, this was before a supposed change in IRS policy that you are guilty until proven innocent..

I'm firmly of the belief that once they call you in for an audit (especially if you have a sched. C) they WILL find something period. All those nickles and dimes add up. Gotta feed the gubment after all, and they can't get it all from the rich, so they **** the middle class in the ass cuz there's more of us and we can't fight.

And yeah, the whole time the bastard was adding up the taxes and penalties for late pay, he kept saying "surprised you got flagged, there's not much here". I'm thinking, ok, maybe a couple hundred bucks. 1200.00 later...

Bastards. Cold hard evil pricks, the lot of them.
