Colorado man opens fire on officer with AR-15 at traffic stop for no headlights

"Hey, turn your headlights on...it's two AM!"

BLAM BLAM BLAM!!!!!

http://tinyurl.com/o8auvk5

A Colorado man is in critical condition on Wednesday after he used an AR-15 assault rifle to fire at an officer and then was shot himself.

A Longmont Police Department press release obtained by the Coloradoan said that the 36-year-old police officer had stopped the suspect at about 2:15 a.m. on Tuesday for driving without headlights.

The suspect got out of his vehicle and “advanced on the officer and began firing multiple rounds at the officer with an AR-15-style rifle,” the statement said.

The officer returned fire, hitting the man three or more times. The department said that the officer had not been injured in the shoot out.

Some portions of Ken Pratt Boulevard were expected to be closed while the shooting was investigated. The department was following its standard procedure of placing the officer on administrative leave during the investigation.

That's too bad. I lived in Longmont back in the early 80's.

Where I live used to be a good place to live back in the ‘80’s too.
Meth heads are responsible for the vast majority of crime around here and it’s not getting better.

Just reading more about this. The nut started shooting at the cop when the cop was still in his cruiser. The cop got out and dropped him. Had a 30 round mag for the AR.

"Immediately after stopping, the suspect exited his vehicle, advanced on the officer and began firing multiple rounds at the officer with an AR15-style rifle," police said in a news release.

The suspect was later identified as Jonathan Shank, 28, of Longmont.

Investigators think Shank's rifle had a 30-round magazine, Longmont Commander Jeffrey M. Satur said.

Satur said Shank fired an "amazing amount of rounds."

The officer said he got out of his car and returned fire with his police-issued Glock 17.

The officer was not hurt, but the suspect was hit at least three times.

Ugh. I went to Longmont High School back in the day. Lived with my dad on Rice Street in a new house he had just bought. Worked at the KFC and made my monthly USNR meetings in Denver by bicycle. He passed away in 2000. We found some paperwork that looked like he was going to sell that house and move to, I think, Montana if I remember correctly. He was already sick of the way the place had grown. In my possession is a book titled So Long, Longmont with a nice handwritten note from the author to my dad. Good stuff. When I was there briefly for the funeral services the place looked nothing like the town I remembered. My siblings warned me not to go to Boulder at least so I still do have nice memories of the way that used to be. Ah well.

So, when this guy gets out of the hospital, he should head straight for a target range and start working on his marksmanship?

No. If he gets out of the hospital, he should charged with attempted murder and whatever ever legal nastiness trying to kill a cop brings.

He’ll probably be too worried about what he can steal to buy more meth than practicing his marksmanship.

Perhaps he should purchase a pistol instead as this story you've posted seems to imply that pistols are far more deadly than AR-15's. Oh wait, I guess I should have used the term "assault rifle" instead of AR-15. My bad. I guess I have a problem remembering the make believe, politically motivated bullshit terminology of the willfully ignorant.
