Does welfare cause terrorism?

Mickey Kaus asks the question:
Does welfare cause terrorism?

How long before we find out that “alleged” Woolwich murderer Michael Adebolajo was on some kind of welfare? Or else his household was on welfare. The Tsarnaevs received various kinds of welfare too, of course, as have numerous other terrorists. This is not a coincidence:

“In fact, there’s a good argument that “welfare benefits + ethnic antagonism” is the universal recipe for an underclass with an angry, oppositional culture. The social logic is simple: Ethnic differences make it easy for those outside of, for example, French Arab neighborhoods to discriminate against those inside, and easy for those inside to resent the mainstream culture around them. Meanwhile, relatively generous welfare benefits enable those in the ethnic ghetto to stay there, stay unemployed, and seethe. Without government subsidies, they would have to overcome the prejudice against them and integrate into the mainstream working culture. Work, in this sense, is anti-terrorist medicine. (And if you work all day, there’s less time to dream up ways and reasons to kill infidels.)”

If Adebolajo turns out to have earned his own living, I’ll be surprised and chastened. Will post update in this space. …

It just so happens that they don't. Moreover, payments made via the surge demonstrate that prospective terrorists are dissuaded simply by providing them money.

Furthermore, I offered two texts that would offer you an actual ability to understand the root causes of terrorism, texts that the State Department required their employees to watch during the Iraq War, FWIW.

All of this proves my point. You're not actually interested in finding out the root causes of terrorism, which is an important, meaningful exercise. Like Kaus, you would rather erroneously project your hatred of a welfare system onto terrorism, as it gives you another reason to hate said system, no matter how illogical, no matter how lacking in evidence.

I'm not talking about advanced theoretical concepts here. This information is elementary, and yet it's totally lost on you.
You don't seem to understand the topic. This isn't about welfare being a singular cause of terrorism and it's not about welfare being related to all terrorism. It's about assimilation in western countries. IMO, it has more relevance to the immigration debate than the GWoT.

Niether causes terrorism. If so, we would have MILLIONS of terrorists, but we don't. We have a handful. You're missing the forest through the trees. The ingredients seem to be these.

-Indoctrination into a group with a single principle of some kind of dehumanization of another group. (religion, nationalism, and racism are the big three off the top of my head but there are many others, I'm sure).

-Circumstances that make an individual value their own life less than whatever principle they are obsessed with. (poverty, abuse, and brain washing or some combination would be the obvious culprits, and I believe a combination of all three is often involved in extreme cases of religion/nationalism/racism).

Ultimately it boils down to... Believing something without solid evidence or good argument. And the stronger you can be made to believe this thing, the worse your behavior is likely to be.

It's terrorism when such an attack is done on a civilian, not a soldier of an occupying force.
Occupation causes terrorism.

That's not a logical conclusion.

Can lighting a lighter cause a grain elevator explosion? We collectively light lighters a gazillion times a day but we don't have millions of grain elevator explosions. Nonetheless, lighting a lighter can indeed cause a grain elevator explosion.

I agree.

Maybe the word "terrorism" is the wrong word to use, but Kaus was trying to make a specific point and while I do think the welfare state contributed in molding these jihadist scum and provided them with food, shelter, healthcare et al without having to actually go to work at a job every day and that of course gave them nothing but free time to seethe with rage and plot and plan how to get even with the westerners that supported their worthless asses, I think a more appropriate premise would be that that welfare creates a criminal class.

These criminals just happened to be muslims, who also just happen to be a demographic that represents a very large percentage of Great Britain's (and Europe in general) welfare class.

Bottom line though is not all islamic terrorists are on welfare in western civilizations.

Quite a few of them actually have lucrative paying careers in the US State Department, Congress, and the White Hut.
