Pappy's Smokehouse in STL

I'm in STL this weekend, and due to great reviews from Zagat, USA Today, Yelp, Food Network etc, decided to try this place. When I walked in, the line was long. They have pictures of celeb customers on the walls. Holy ****in Batman... this place was a huge let down. The beans, corn and sauces were alright, but the meats were something shocking. There was no smokey flavor or any resemblance of a smoke ring on anything. The brisket, particularly, tasted like rubber roast beef. I understand a restaurant not quite living up to hype, but this was mind-boggling. Have these reviewers and celebs ever tasted remotely decent BBQ before? Shit, I'm pissed.

I don't get it. I got plenty of love for all styles of Q.
No doubt. A lot of the bbq sucks in KC too. Including from the good places if you're there on the wrong day. I've had shitty q from Bryant's, Jack Stack, etc.

The biggest thing I think helps KC is meat quality. I'd rather eat a hotdog from the Midwest than any cut of pork from Texas. Their beef sucks too.

I openly admit I'll take KC BBQ over any regions BBQ because I'm biased. People in Texas and the other que regions are the same way. I appreciate other que styles. Hell I've taken road trips to Austin and the hill country to try different places. Sometime in the near future I'm going to go to Franklins BBQ in Austin and see if its worth the hype. As for Pappys, like most things from St. Louis, it's inferior to KC.
