July 2013's labor report released

Obamacare Strikes: Part-Time Jobs Surge To All Time High; Full-Time Jobs Plunge By 240,000
Submitted by Tyler Durden
on 07/05/2013 09:13 -0400

As a reminder: jobs have quantity and quality components. The quantity component was good enough to convince the 10 Year the taper is imminent (if not stocks, which continue to trade dislocated from any and all fundamentals). But how about the quality? In a word: not good. In June, the household survey reported that part-time jobs soared by 360,000 to 28,059,000 - an all time record high. Full time jobs? Down 240,000. And looking back at the entire year, so far in 2013, just 130K Full-Time Jobs have been added, offset by a whopping 557K Part-Time jobs. And there is your jobs "quality".

Unemployment rising because of people losing jobs equals bad. Unemployment rising because people, who were previously not looking, start to try to enter the labor force, means those people feel jobs are coming back. This is a good sign, though not world changing news.

Listen, there are multiple measurements of unemployment.

You should at least understand what the number the government gives you means.

http://www.bls.gov/lau/stalt.htm

Quote:
Six alternative measures of labor underutilization have long been available on a monthly basis from the Current Population Survey (CPS) for the United States as a whole. They are published in the Bureau of Labor Statistics' monthly Employment Situation news release. (See table 15.) The official concept of unemployment (as measured in the CPS by U-3 in the U-1 to U-6 range of alternatives) includes all jobless persons who are available to take a job and have actively sought work in the past four weeks. This concept has been thoroughly reviewed and validated since the inception of the CPS in 1940. The other measures are provided to data users and analysts who want more narrowly (U-1 and U-2) or broadly (U-4 through U-6) defined measures.
Notice how it says actively seeks work. This is important. Someone who is unemployed, but not actively seeking work is not counted in this government measurement.

Quote:
Definitions for the economic characteristics underlying the three broader measures of labor underutilization are worth mentioning here. Discouraged workers (U-4, U-5, and U-6 measures) are persons who are not in the labor force, want and are available for work, and had looked for a job sometime in the prior 12 months. They are not counted as unemployed because they had not searched for work in the prior 4 weeks, for the specific reason that they believed no jobs were available for them. The marginally attached (U-5 and U-6 measures) are a group that includes discouraged workers. The criteria for the marginally attached are the same as for discouraged workers, with the exception that any reason could have been cited for the lack of job search in the prior 4 weeks. Persons employed part time for economic reasons (U-6 measure) are those working less than 35 hours per week who want to work full time, are available to do so, and gave an economic reason (their hours had been cut back or they were unable to find a full-time job) for working part time. These individuals are sometimes referred to as involuntary part-time workers.
Is it a bit dishonest to measure the unemployment that way? I think it is. But, every administration releases the measurements like this, so it is best to understand where the numbers came from.

Jesus, ignorance and arrogance go hand in hand with you conservatives around here.

The governments numbers are manipulated. One thing we can always count on, is politicians keep changing how such things get measured due to not liking the results. It's a scam, but Brave New Worlder's believe everything the state tells them.

It's not cheering anything on.

It's understanding the information the government gives you. Anyone, on both sides, should know that a 7.2 unemployment rate isn't actual the unemployment rate. And you should understand why.

And regardless of of who is in charge, more Americans actively seeking work is a sign of worker confidence in the job market.

Claim to be above the partisan fry while attacking people who say Americans having confidence in the Job Market is a good sign.

That IMO is the single biggest problem we have with our Government. Both sides are unwilling to hold “their guys” accountable.

Just to be contrarian…

Has there ever been a time in our history where we have had more people dying and retiring than those graduating high school and college?

I suppose they may have been during the Civil war or sometime during a great Flu epidemic but, other than that would not the natural direction always be more people seeking employment simply because we have population growth?

Look another one who doesn't understand the employment measurements, what they mean, or how it is measured.
