Obama's Syrian Allies Bombard Christian Village

Obama’s allies in Syria — those who will directly benefit from the coming US airstrikes — stepped up their genocide against Syrian Christians today, attacking Maaloula, a Christian village, indiscriminately using mortar shells fired from a hilltop above the village.

According to the press report:

“Maaloula, a mountain village some 40 miles (60 kilometers) northeast of Damascus, is home to about 2,000 residents, some of whom still speak a version of Aramaic, the ancient language of biblical times believed to have been spoken by Jesus.”
Never mind the allegation no matter if false about Assad's attack on civilians, these guys are engaged in Christian genocide.

First, it's up to Congress now whether or not to strike in Syria, right, so it's not "Obama's" anything.

Second, if/when we do hit the Syrian government, it won't be BECAUSE we want to help these people, though it may well have that indirect effect.

But you've never been very good with cause/effect analysis anyway...

Obama is the one pushing the cause to ally with the rebels. So you are full of spin. Not only that but Obama will do it anyway even without a congressional vote which is only a political move by Obama, who doesn't even think he needs their okay. ( Bush felt the same way.) Didn't you even see Kerry say to Rand Obama didn't need it?

Funny how Kerry is stealing the lines of Wolfowitz on going into Iraq.

You never been good at looking at the whole story,or connecting earlier posts so you can alter what was said to worsen it. Nor are you good at seeing the motives behind politicians motives or cause and effect analysis either. That's why you are projecting. You're a dyed-in-the wool blind statist.

Credibility is one of the other justifications—let's look at this

The US must bomb Syria, we are told, to maintain its “credibility” on the world stage. I don’t get it. The US government invaded, occupied, and destabilized Afghanistan and Iraq. The US military uses cluster bombs, white phosphorus, and depleted uranium shells, all banned or discouraged by international treaty or convention. The President endorses extrajudicial execution, extraordinary rendition, and torture, all prohibited by the Geneva Conventions. The NSA spies on its own citizens, in violation of US law, and denies it until caught. What credibility could the US government possibly have?
Sounds about right!

“Catastrophic!” said Sen. John McCain.

If Congress votes no on a resolution calling for U.S. intervention in Syria’s civil war, says McCain, it would be “catastrophic” for U.S. credibility in the world.

Hurting Assad helps them whether that is our goal or not. They will indirectly benefit from it. We are better off wiping our hands of this and focusing on other things.

No, it's still up to Obama. Congress can strengthen him or give him political cover, but they don't have ultimate control over the decision. It's long past time for our President to put on his big boy pants, take some responsibility, and be a leader.

Refusing to help Assad also helps the rebels so do you want to intervene on Assad's side as a result of this news?

That's pretty cool that they still speak Aramaic...

These "US friendly rebels" are factions of Al Qaeda & the Muslim Brotherhood. And now, the US and CIA are working with them to oust Assad.

It's really no surprise to anyone, is it?

The rebels are considerably more diverse than you describe.

BTW, did your high school history class teach you about the time we sided with the communists against a common foe in Europe? My history teacher called it World War II and despite our profound differences with the Soviets and the subsequent difficulties we faced due to those differences, it seemed to work out pretty well for us.

Sometimes the world can be a confusing place where interests don't always align perfectly.

Sorry pat, but these rebels aka insurgents are dominated by AQ. Furthermore, the Christians support Assad which is why they're being killed. That tells me he is the lesser of the two evils. This is nothing more than a precursor to bombing Iran, despite betting a new govt willing to cooperate on inspections.

The rebels are diverse. AQ's power, along with that of similarly aligned islamists from groups like the Muslim Brotherhood, within the insurgency has grown over the past two years and I'm not saying that they aren't the dominant force now.

If the Christians actually support Assad, as opposed to hoping that Assad's forces can save them from an even more immediate threat, they're no friends of ours.
