Chase Daniel comes out "nose heavy", afraid the cameras might pick up on another unfortunate private moment, his balance is off for the first half, KU capitalizes and holds on in the second half!

I think it's going to be more of a border firing squad than a border war.

AMES, Iowa - The epitaph on Missouri’s 2008 football season is nowhere near complete, but when the Tigers trek to Kansas City next month for the Big 12 Conference championship game, they’ll leave behind a trail of roadkill - two year’s worth of trampled division brethren. With last night’s 52-20 taming of Iowa State, No. 12 Missouri won its 10th consecutive game against North Division opponents and, more important, clinched its second straight North title, stripping any drama from the regular-season finale against Kansas, other than the usual bragging rights nastiness associated with the Border Showdown.
"We’re definitely trying to send the message that we want to dominate this side of the conference," Missouri linebacker Sean Weatherspoon said after a postgame celebration that was subdued compared to last year’s euphoric North-clincher against Kansas in the regular-season finale. "We really want to dominate every game, but as far as playing the North opponents the last two years, we’ve just taken care of business. It’s pretty much that when you think about the North, you’re going to think about Mizzou." That was hardly the rallying cry here two years ago when Iowa State’s Jack Trice Stadium provided the stage for one of the low moments of Gary Pinkel’s time at Missouri, a 21-16 loss that ended when a holding penalty erased MU’s go-ahead touchdown run in the final seconds. Since that blustery night here in 2006, the Tigers have yet to lose a division game, outscoring the last 10 foes 468-182. That’s an average score of Tigers 46-Cornhuskers, Buffaloes, Wildcats, Jayhawks, Cyclones 18. "We want to control the North Division," wide receiver Jeremy Maclin said. "We want to stay on top. Mizzou’s on the rise. Now we got to stay up there." Capturing the North trophy, which, by the way was nowhere near Ames last night, was Missouri’s first goal for the season but not the last, as quarterback Chase Daniel reminded reporters last night. Unfinished business will be waiting for the Tigers in Kansas City. "It’s great to be able to play tough in this division, but if you want to be the best in the conference, you’ve got to compete with the South powers," he said after throwing for 328 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. "We’re excited about getting the chance to do that. But we’ve still got the KU game." Yes, but thanks to an afternoon assist from Texas, which defeated Kansas 35-7 earlier in the day, the Tigers (9-2, 5-2 Big 12) punched their ticket to the Dec. 6 conference championship game at Arrowhead Stadium. Oklahoma, Texas or Texas Tech will represent the South Division in the title game. But, first up for the Tigers comes a bye week, then an Arrowhead appetizer, the Nov. 29 regular-season finale against those same Jayhawks. "Whoever comes out of the South, everyone’s worthy down there," Maclin said. "We’re excited to play, but I think the KU game’s a lot bigger." Unlike last year’s explosion of emotion at Arrowhead, the Tigers saved their celebration for the locker room last night, even sparing Pinkel the traditional postgame Gatorade bath. Nor did they take home any hardware. Conference officials confirmed that the division champion cannot receive the trophy at a road game unless it’s the final game of the regular season. Missouri, which will technically host the Border Showdown, will receive the trophy sometime in Kansas City, team spokesman Chad Moller said. Back on the field, Missouri played again without its leading receiver as tight end Chase Coffman (sprained to) missed his second straight game. The Tigers didn’t seem to miss him much. MU never punted and scored points on eight of 10 possessions. Despite two fumbles on the game’s opening drive, MU scored on third-and-goal from the 3 on Daniel’s slant to Tommy Saunders. Daniel was perfect in the first quarter, completing 16 of 16 passes - one of which Maclin snagged after it bounced off Danario Alexander - for 106 yards. MU’s second drive bled into the second quarter and ended with Derrick Washington’s 2-yard touchdown run on a direct snap, finishing off the season’s longest scoring drive in terms of plays (17) and time of possession (6:29). Daniel’s 11th interception of the season ended Missouri’s next drive as Daniel matched his 2007 total when cornerback Allen Bell snatched a fastball that bounced off the hands of freshman tight end Michael Egnew. But free safety William Moore picked up his fellow co-captain and delivered his long-awaited first interception of the season. On ISU’s third play of the ensuing drive, Moore picked off Austen Arnaud at the 17 and dashed to the end zone for his fourth career interception return for a touchdown, breaking Erik McMillan’s 21-year-old school record of three. "We’ve been practicing that same exact play in practice all week, all week," Moore said. "It really paid off." Missouri’s game plan leaned on Daniel’s arm most of the first half, but the running game made a cameo appearance before halftime when Washington cut back a run off the right side, slicing through a huge alley cleared by center Tim Barnes. Washington handled the rest on the 56-yard touchdown run. He finished with 128 yards on just 11 carries. Maclin fumbled after a reception deep into ISU territory but more than redeemed himself later on a 43-yard catch-and-run to the end zone, capping a dominant night and a dominant stretch against a division that’s been painted with a two-year coat of black and gold. "Now we want a Big 12 championship," Daniel said. "And we put ourselves in position to win one."

Not game related, but didn't anyone else hear Crabtree from Rivals on 810 today talk about Sheldon Richardson?
He said some Rivals guys that have seen Sheldon play say he's the best D-line prospect they've seen since Julius Peppers. I really, really, really hope that guy keeps his commitment and comes to Mizzou. |
