Mark Mangino will not return as Kansas football coach, a source close to the situation told Joe Schad of ESPN Thursday night.
The team is scheduled to be told at a meeting Thursday evening.
Athletic director Lew Perkins launched an investigation into Mangino's treatment of players three weeks ago. The Jayhawks won the first five games of the season before going on a seven-game losing streak. Mangino was 50-48 in eight years -- two wins shy of the school record for a coach.
After going 12-1 in 2007 and winning the Orange Bowl, Mangino was given a raise and a contract extension through 2012.

Yes, and Tony Dungy is probably dying to coach at UConn or something.

His comments that he may have lost some people at KU but not the players is pretty clear. Perkins had been conspiring against him for a long time, and Mangino knew it. I wouldn't be surprised if he cut a backroom deal at midseason with whomever his appointee will be.

Perhaps he will hold back on a decision for a while, if he wishes to get more funds in the meantime, to supposedly attract the best candidate.

I'm wondering who would work for someone who would cut the legs off their coach like that, whatever Mangino's failings may have been.
Perkins and Mangino didn't really get along from the start. Perkins didn't hire Mangino. If Perkins hires his own guy, I'm sure it would work out fine. I bet they go after UConn's coach. He's already at a school where football takes the backseat to basketball so he knows how to deal with that, something that I dont think Mangino could deal with deep down inside. Not to mention that I think Lew is the one that hired the UConn coach when he was at UConn before he came to Kansas.

I doubt that. His wife is from the KC area, so who knows. Family ties (especially the wifes family) can make certain deals look better than they are.

Personally, I don't see Harbaugh as a good fit. He's a name, but I don't necessarily think he'd be the right guy.

Harbaugh can get an NFL job if he wants one. I just don't think he'd leave Stanford for Kansas.

It's sad that from the Chiefs' fairly recent past, this could actually be worse.... No Greg Robinson. They could bring in LJ for cakn patna counseling for those preparing for a career in the NFL....

I hate you all.

I do look for someone big ( Not Mangino BIG ) to come in, restructure what they have, reload and start firing away again. It will take a couple of years to reload with a new coach, but the potential is there now that there ever has been before.
