Pioli says Chiefs can turn around after 0-2 start
Pioli says Chiefs can turn around after 0-2 start
By ADAM TEICHER The Kansas City Star Like seemingly much of Kansas City, general manager Scott Pioli is more than a little stunned by the Chiefs’ 0-2 start. But Pioli said Tuesday that his confidence in the Chiefs is not shaken and he remains convinced the Chiefs can still make something of their season. “If any one of us knew what the answer was, we wouldn’t be sitting where we’re sitting right now,” Pioli said. “But I also don’t think it’s the end of the world. We have 14 games left. We’re certainly digging a hole but it’s not something we can’t get out of. Everyone within the organization is disappointed in the results so far. We’re all surprised because I don’t think any one of us went into the season thinking we would be 0-2. I don’t think any of us anticipated that. “(He expects the Chiefs) to improve, get better and start winning some games in whatever order that is. Those are my expectations, but I want to be clear those are mine and our expectations. I think those are the players’ expectations, the coaching staff, the fan base. Our expectations at the beginning of this year were that we were going to be winning games. Right now, we haven’t done that. (But) we’re two games into a 16-game season.” The Chiefs are one of six 0-2 teams in the NFL, but they weren’t close to winning either game. Their scoring differential of minus-34 points is second-worst in the league behind only Tennessee. As the general manager, Pioli built the roster. Asked whether he was guilty of overestimating the abilities of some of the Chiefs’ players, Pioli said, “We think the roster is good enough. I think it is. Now it comes down to executing. We improved this team through free agency and did quite a bit of spending to improve this team whether it was contract extensions or the signing of other players. Time will tell if it was enough. I think it was.” Regarding their spending, figures supplied by the NFL Players Association showed the Chiefs to have more than $26 million in available room under the league’s salary cap. Pioli said he didn’t regret not using more of that available cap space when the Chiefs built their roster. “I think there are things we did do that helped this football team,” Pioli said. “I also know for a fact that this year alone we’re spending over $141 million in cash this year. That’s more than $20 million over the cap. “It’s been proven time and time again that there’s not a direct correlation between spending cap dollars and winning. There’s not.” Pioli said the Chiefs would need to allocate some of their available 2012 salary cap space toward the 2013 cap. He didn’t provide 2013 cap figures, but his comments indicate the Chiefs might otherwise be snug against the cap next season. “We had better have cap room this year to roll over for next year to make sure we’re (in good shape),” Pioli said. “(Using available salary cap space) is not a year-by-year, fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants thing. Pioli during the offseason also hired Romeo Crennel as head coach, promoting him from defensive coordinator. Crennel finished last season as the interim coach. The Chiefs went 2-1 in those games and fell just short of making the playoffs and completing a dramatic turnaround. Crennel remains the defensive coordinator this season as well. But the poor play of the Chiefs’ defense is a big reason for the 0-2 start. They have allowed 75 points, which is tied for worst in the league. Asked whether Crennel was the right coach to direct the Chiefs out of their hole, Pioli said, “Absolutely he is. I think he’s doing a good job. I really do.” Read more here: http://www.kansascity.com/2012/09/18...#storylink=cpy |

Fat Scott and Romeo deflecting blame and putting it all on the players.
I am sure that is going over well in the locker room. Quite a leadership group Clark has assembled at One Arrowhead Drive. 800 metric tons of gutless trash. |

I don't even know what point you think you're making. The first round tender at the end of the 2010 season only limits other teams' actions in signing Carr. It says they are allowed to sign him but they would forfeit a 1st round pick to KC. That is what the "restricted" part of being a RFA means. It has no bearing on what KC can do in terms of negotiating a new contract. That tender does nothing but protect KC's interests. It's all win. At the end of 2011 season, Carr became an UFA. At that point, he's free game to the highest bidder or the team he wants to go to. Obviously KC can only use one franchise tag so they would have had to sign Bowe or Carr, and tag the other. You don't know what you're talking about, and I don't think you even know what you're trying to talk about.

Do you really think that's how it went? Because I don't think the owner who's been spending more than 20% over the cap two years in a row is suddenly going to balk at keeping two of his drafted, homegrown players. I'd say it's far more likely that Pioli sees signing guys to under-market deals as some sort of badge of honor. If he had to negotiate a contract like Carr's with Dallas, he'd feel like less of a man and probably wouldn't be able to get an erection. |

If not, and I'm wrong, he's the biggest ****ing pussy owner of all time. What idiot owner wouldn't want to sign his homegrown talent? |

You can say "I don't care how much money he spends, he's still cheap" as much as you want, but it's starting to look a little silly. If you want to, though, we can certainly criticize Clark for not going "What? **** that. Get him signed." when Pioli presumably told him that keeping Carr wasn't the right move for the team. |

I said it during the Bowe/Carr crap and it's true.
Clark hired a guy who runs a team with the mindset of "don't pay a talented guy if you don't think you have to, even if he deserves it." They're perfect for each other.

It's clear that Clark Hunt didn't want to shell out the $50 million or so necessary to re-sign two home grown players. Otherwise, they would have been signed. Period. End of story. And stop with the ****ing payroll bullshit. |

Going 0-16 would only benefit this team in the long run.
Do you really want to see a season where the Chiefs play like crap, somehow win 30-40% of their games, and have the management keep telling the press that everyone is doing a great job and getting better? I don't. |

I been busy coaching MS and HS team here in Kansas City, and it's much better to teach them the basic fundamentals and help them get better every day. It's definitely much better this way and more enjoyable for a guy like me, and it helps that K-State is winning as well. I'm not going to let whatever that I have no control over going to bother me. I'm just going to focus on what I can control.

Saying Clark Hunt is cheap has officially been debunked.
He may not be sending the checks to the right places, but the checks are getting signed and sent out. Dane, I just don't understand how ANYONE can call a guy cheap that is one of the highest spenders of cash on player payroll, pays the highest amount to his GM of anyone in football and his team would be OVER the salary cap if we didn't roll over 20 million of cap space from last year. Carr wanted to play in Dallas and that's where he went and never left regardless of who was calling (and there were multiple teams) so Pioli made a major move asap to fill his spot by adding Routt (who has played well so far) Not only that, but by losing Carr we will get a third round compensatory pick. Routt + 3.5 million + 3rd round pick > Brandon Carr As far as Bowe goes...he has the same agent as Mike Wallace and MW has said he wants top 3 wr money...cant imagine Bowes demands are much different. That's in the neighborhood of 45 million guaranteed dollars...not 50 million combined for Carr + Bowe...that would be closer to 70 million in guarantees for the pair. When ALL of the evidence is examined, it's understandable where we are with Bowe and Carr. TBH Bowe is only ****ong himself because if Pioli signs Albert long term during the year (which is highly possible) Bowe will get tagged again after this season and will hit free agency at 30 years old. At that point, he is gonna be hoping for top 10 money and that's if he doesn't get any significant injuries...the years will also be less, too because nobody is gonna sign him a 30 year old wr to a 6 year deal...likely a 3 or 4 year deSl MAX. There are lots of things to fault Pioli and Hunt for...Carr and Bowe shouldn't be included IMO. |
