How the **** do you know what they were offering and what Houston/Berry were asking for?

Guys like Houston and Berry that are established are more willing to bet on themselves. You don't think Houston saw his 22 sack season coming? In Berry's case he's asking for way too much.

A guy like Fisher will take this deal because it's good for him with where he's at in his career. For us it gets the deal done before he becomes too expensive. Obviously that is what Dorsey is betting on here. It's a win/win and you're somehow trying to spin it as a negative with terrible reasoning.

Not a bad deal when you consider the market for players right now.

I read about that recently. Going completely off memory here so someone feel free to check me, but I want to say we ran the ball on 43% of plays last season which was good for like 9th in the league or something.

We run the ball more than it seems.
I was going to post that. I wouldn't be upset with them throwing it more. They need to get bigger chunk plays more often.

I guess that can come via the run though too

Houston's deal (and Berry's if the Chiefs gave in) was a deal in which he was paid for past performance. I don't the front office felt like he could duplicate the 22 sack season but most likely thought he could be a consistent 13-15 sacks per year guy for 3 or 4 years before declining. Unfortunately, he was injured last year and fell fall short of the mark.

With Ware, West, Kelce and Fisher, the contracts are far different because they're more inline with the player's ceiling. While West and/or Ware may each earn more money down the road, their contracts are commensurate with their value. Kelce's one of the better tight ends in the league and while he may increase his TD and yardage total once or twice over the course of his deal, his current production matches his contract.

Fisher still has room to grow but I find it doubtful that he'll suddenly become an Orlando Pace or Anthony Munoz. But he does have the ability to become a John Alt type of consistent player that appears in a Pro Bowl every now and then.

If he reaches his ceiling (which should happen this year), the Chiefs will have a good left tackle, on the cheap, for the next 6 years.

Hope so. JC's got big-play ability coming out of the backfield.

I'd like to see that homerun threat JC again. Haven't really seen much of that dude since 2012 or so.

He refused to sign there and in fact said he wanted Watt money before his 22 sack season. They couldn't justify giving him that at that point (and frankly, Watt money was what he got anyway).
Per Terez Paylor, they didn't even make a formal offer.

Yeah. I didn't recommend signing him during chemo, but they could have seen how he played during TC or the first spate of games and gotten him for a below market salary

I am not talking about Hudson.

The Chiefs are unilateral actors here and the number of times they've gotten deals done at simply fair figures tells me that when they don't, it's not because the Chiefs aren't looking to get something done but rather that the player is not really all that interested in signing away his FA status.
I can't really agree, because in most cases, they end up marginally overpaying players, which is why they are in the bottom five in cap space and top 10 in dead money.

Houston needs to stay healthy. He was on pace to be one of the better pass rushers in the league last year before injury, plus dudes the leader of the d.

If he can't stay healthy tho, it's no bueno

About the Eric Berry thing, it's cancer. They never know if/when the cancer will be back. So it's not really smart for them to sink all of that money/allocate that much cap space for a guy that they don't know will be healthy for long. It sucks but that's the truth of the matter.

No, I'm not. Look at where Eric Fisher is. Look at where he's likely to go. Look at his past injury history. That information does not scream #2 in guaranteed money among tackles to me.

You can think that if you want, but look at how his representation has handled these discussions and I'm of the mind that the moment he showed himself sound, that ship had sailed. Moreover, relapse was always a concern. They'd have been irresponsible as hell to try to sign him to any sort of long-term deal (and yes, it would've come at great cost) prior to showing that he was physically recovered and could sustain that.

Quote:

Yes you are; you're talking about the Chiefs pattern of approaching players in-season to discuss deals. Hudson's a deal that didn't get done but they absolutely approached him. It suggests that they perhaps did approach Berry.

Quote:
I can't really agree, because in most cases, they end up marginally overpaying players, which is why they are in the bottom five in cap space and top 10 in dead money.
Why would you sign away your right to FA if it didn't come at a premium in this environment? And frankly, I'm not convinced any of them were overpays. Bailey's deal has turned out that way because he got hurt but that's the nature of those early signings. Fisher's is the same way; if he stays healthy, this won't be an overpay. If he doesn't, it will be. Kelce's wasn't an overpay. In either event, you're trying to have it both ways. Early signings are a risk; some work, some don't. It's hard to complain about overpays for injured guys like Bailey when that's exactly the risk you run when you buy out their FA early.

They're in the bottom 5 in cap space because they had to throw money at mid-tier players early in the Pioli regime to re-build depth. As they go further along, they'll continue to build depth internally and contracts for players like Daniel, Devito, Fasano, the Bowe mess, etc.... won't be necessary.

The first step? Not making that same mistake with Eric Berry.
