The Fishing Thread

So how many of you are into fishing? What do you fish for and how often do you go? Any tips for how to get the monster of your choice, lures, bait, flies? Feel free to throw in a fishing story or two as well. What was your best or worst experience while out fishing?

We went up river about a a mile and were fishing the far side of an island completely surrounded by water slaying the rainbows when there was a noise in the bushes about 30 feet away. I was thinking deer, but knew there was a chance that a bear could have made it out there as well. I slowly removed my .454 Casull from the holster and stood there until I could figure out what in the hell was making all that noise.

Much to my surprise, it was some long haired Hippy "crawling" around through the bushes. He looked at me and saw I had the Casull out of the holster and froze with a deer in the headlight look on his face.
I reholstered the pistol and told him that it's not wise to sneak up on people in bear country. The dim bulb just keeps looking at me with the same stupid look on his face.

I asked him "what is it we can do for you?" He comes back with, "I am just out for a walk." I explained to the strokestick that he was spooking the fish (he had some bright red whore house looking shirt on) and asked him to move on. Without a word he hooks it back across the river and vanishes. I went to the top of the hill to keep an eye on him because I knew the only place for him to park was next to my Jeep.

Sure enough, the freak starts walking around my jeep looking in my windows. I had to walk all the way back over there to see what the hell he was doing, so by the time I got over there, I was pissed off that this tool was cutting into my fishing time. I asked him "What in the fuck are you doing hanging out around my Jeep?" He claimed he wasn't. I told the slippery cockroach that I had been watching him and once again he didn't say a word. I explained to him that I thought it would be best if he moved on down the road.....NOW or he was going to have a bad day. He did, and I went back and caught more fish.
YOu lead one hell of a life bwana...I just laughed my azz off reading that last paragraph.

Henry, it was one of the strangest experiences of my life. The guy wasn't banging on all eight cylinders.

So when is your big fishing trip to Molson land?

So any luck guys? I went late last week and it was damn near unfishable. The water was about the color of cowboy coffee from all the runoff. I had to ditch the fly reel and break out the bright lures to get any hits. I ended up with two browns and two bows.

It looks like I will be going a different way to get to my summer fishing grounds as well. A dozen plus mudslides wacked the road yesterday I take to Cooke City up by Yellowstone park.

Went three times this weekend.

Saturday afternoon: took my dog and hit a smallmouth stream. Caught one little dink of a bream. Only had an hour, and the main purpose was to get my dog on the water for a bit. He ruined most of the holes I was going to fish before I was able to fish them. He's usually pretty good about staying behind me, but he'd been cooped up too long lately.

Saturday Dusk: fished the lake my inlaws live on in Bella Vista. Pencil poppers tossed into cover around dusk. Many, many juvenile largemouth caught.

Sunday Morning: went back out on the lake. Got out too late because our son kept us up that night. I needed to sleep in. Landed one absolutely gigantic bluegill on a clouser minnow. Nothing else. Only fished for about an hour.

The smallmouth fishing is starting to get really good around here, but I haven't been able to really get in on it. We have rain all week off and on, so all the creeks should rise. Once they fall back down, the smallmouth action should be hot!

I went out quite a bit this weekend.

I caught nice bass on the first 3 cast with the first hoodaddy I tried. We tore the bass up and transported several to a couple of new ponds we're re-stocking.

I ordered 6 more bags today, of different color and sizes. I'm a believer.

Old Faithful, the electric Blue, white tailed 8" worm I'd been missing and found, worked its usual charms. A friend turned his sample into a 3 and 5lb bass. One pond, 3 of us probably got 60 bass in an hour....all 14-15".

The bass thumb is brutal, but worth it.

A world-record catfish was caught this past Sunday on the Mississippi and will be on display in KCK:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050524/..._st/big_fish_1

Quote:
ALTON, Ill. - It sounds like the sort of tale Mark Twain might have cooked up: A man fishing in the Mississippi River hauls in a blue catfish roughly the size of a sixth-grader. But this is no fish story. Early Sunday, Tim Pruitt caught a 124-pound blue catfish.

To get a sense of just how big that is, the state record holder was a mere 85 pounds and the world record holder tipped the scales at 121 pounds, 8 ounces.

Now, Pruitt, whose fish has already been weighed in the presence of a conservation police officer and measured by a biologist for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, is expected to submit documentation to the International Game Fish Association so that it can be certified a world record holder.

Once that is done, the catch should be approved as the world's largest blue catfish, replacing the current champion that was caught Jan. 16, 2004, in Lake Texoma, Texas, said Becky Reynolds, a spokeswoman for the association.

Pruitt's fish, measuring 58 inches long and 44 inches around, was swimming below the Melvin Price Lock and Dam on the Mississippi River at Alton on Saturday night when it grabbed Pruitt's line. The two struggled for more than half an hour, and at one point the fish dragged the boat carrying Pruitt, his wife and a friend before Pruitt could reel it in.

The fish has been kept alive and will be on display in a tank at the Cabela's Outfitter store in Kansas City, Kan., according to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

Pruitt, 33, of Godfrey, told the (Peoria) Journal Star's outdoors columnist that he considered releasing the fish in the river but decided to donate it to Cabela's "because I thought it might be neat to give people a chance to see a fish that massive."
