Child actress Dakota Fanning will appear in a controversial new movie featuring paedophile scenes.

War of the Worlds star Dakota, 12, has signed up to appear in Hounddog.

The screenplay calls for Fanning's character to be raped in one explicit scene and to appear naked or clad only in "underpants" in several other horrifying moments.

A source close to the film said: "The two taboos in Hollywood are child abuse and the killing of animals.

"In this movie, both things happen." Fanning's mother, Joy, and her Hollywood agent, Cindy Osbrink, see the movie, written and directed by Deborah Kampmeier, as a possible Oscar vehicle for the pint-size star.

But despite Fanning's status as a bankable actress - whose movies, including last year's War of the Worlds have earned more than half a billion dollars since 2001 - the alarming material seems to have scared off potential investors, according to the New York Daily News.

The film charts the life of a girl who is abused and finds solace in the music of Elvis Presley.

Fanning's carefully choreographed rape scene has already been filmed. But then the production - which also stars Robin Wright Penn, David Morse and Piper Laurie - was stopped because of a lack of money.

But emergency investors were found and the movie is set to be finished by the end of the week.

"It's not just the rape scene - the whole story is challenging Dakota as an actress," Fanning's agent, Osbrink, said.

"And I've never been so proud of her in my life. In every scene she gets better and better."

Actors wouldn't be actors if they didn't care about the artform they were producing. Most of them go crazy not when they land the blockbuster, but when they land the small artsy film that really lets them show their true colors. I bet Johnny Depp's favorite movie to make wasn't Pirates, it was probably Fear and Loathing, or Blow, or something like that.

I think too some people have this image of a sweet little girl who has no clue about the way of the world being bullied into this by some money-hungry parents, and I don't see that at all. I lost my virginity at 12, so I can tell you from experience there are a lot of preteens out there that have a shockingly good idea of what it takes in order to be with another person. I have a feeling she knows EXACTLY what she was getting herself into, hell I was 7 when I developed my most rudimentary concepts of sex.

And not all movies are about entertainment. Watch Schindler's List and tell me you're entertained. Tell me you enjoy it. I hate that movie, it makes me feel sick to my stomach and whenever I see it, and I can't sleep that night. It's not entertaining in the slightest, yet its the best movie ever made.

I fully admit that the actual filming of the scene could cause psychological problems for a 12 year old. I had a full awareness of what I was doing when I had sex, yes. The sex itself I don't regret but the relationship I do. And I know 50 year old people who have regrets about being with certain partners, so that's a moot point.

I can honestly say I would have had a full comprehension of this stuff at her age. Like I said before, I had 90% comprehension of it at the age of 7.

As far as putting art ahead of people... I think quite the opposite. In my view, it is ONLY exploitation if she is objectified, or feels violated in real life. Not to say that kiddie porn is OK if the girl "agrees" to do it. But there is a big difference between something like this and something that is designed for perverts to get off to.

Very good point. I didn't mean to imply that exploitation and kiddie porn were synonomous.

Absolutely, if the nudity or the scene turns out to be gratuitous, and/or if she were at all pressured to do it, and/or if she felt objectified or violated in any way as a way to make this film "edgy" and sell more tickets, than I think that's freaking TERRIBLE. But not because she's 12. Because she's HUMAN. That's a terrible thing to do to anybody and even if she were 25 it's still exploitation. I'm not advocating a world where anything goes. I'm saying that I think there is a pretty good chance that Dakota, her parents, and the director who cast her have a better idea about what she is mature enough to handle than I do.

You referring to my Aristotle reference? I wasn't thinking about nudity at all. I was talking about Aristotle's view of what makes a good play or story. He thought plays were more than just to "entertain." Ever since him, the face of drama has changed drastically.

But the Greeks were WAY messed up about sex. They lived in a society where it was totally cool to have an apprentice boy or girl, and teach them a trade or craft while having sex with them during working hours. Then at night, they'd go back to their wives. This wasn't even taboo.
