This US team is pretty mediocre, i think they played a sound strategic game (Well played Coach Bradley) against a team who could not adjust to take advantage of all the opportunities they had. Howard showed why he is a great goalkeeper.

That being said, any team can beat any team on any given day. Strategy is a big component in soccer (even though it might not seem that way). I think the US had nothing to lose, they were expected to lose to a greater opponent, with loads more talent on the field, but Del Bosque could not figure out a way to pentrate that last line of Defense, specifically Howard.

Brazil looks flat, but they are facing the locals, always a tough game... (See France vs Brazil 1998 WC)

BTW, I am an Avid supporter for the US, and my home country of Argentina (we didnt make this tourney because we lost to Brazil in the Finals)... But Argentina has a large problem right now with Strategy, Maradona is the coach, amazing player, but i doubt his technical ability... Our talent is second to none on our team, yet he cannot find the right mix of players to actually win confortablly... example 1-0 vs colombia at home this past qualifier.

Hell of a game by SA. That's a heartbreaking free kick to give up.

Bolivia was bad, but not because we lost, just the way we lost.... it wast even as bad as 1993 loss to Colombia in Buenos Aires 0-5...

We dont win in the Altitude, its a big deal, i think we havent won in Ecuador in 15+ years and it has been awhile (i think 20+ years) since we won in Bolivia. so that didnt stun me... it was the matter we got crushed... Maradona has won his two home games and lost 2 away games that we werent expecting to win... but one thing is to lose 1-0, 3-1, 2-0 and another thing is to get completely out classed by them.. and coaching blunders (ex not taking out players that were ridiculous tired, and taking out players - Tevez and Heinze come to mind - that were playing their hearts out...)

Well sounds like SA lost?

I think that means their fans will root for the US.

I don't know which team will have the crowd on its side though. I know for sure that the US won over the fans in that Spain Game.

Danny Alves' shot is what I lived for back in the day, hour after hour working on pace and placement.

That was a work of art. They knew what was coming and couldn't stop it.

Keeping Riquelme off the squad certainly hasn't helped things, although the blame should probably extend to both parties, at least somewhat. Legend or not, Diego just doesn't seem to be steering the ship right now.

I know we talked before about it but I'm always rooting for Argentina to succeed as well as the US. It's unfortunate the way things have been going of late.

Maradona is just another in a long line of players who were great, but make lousy managers.

Seems to me that the best managers are the players who were never really that good. They couldn't skate through on their physical ability and really had to learn the game. That's what makes them great managers. People like Maradona just don't identify and don't have that deep tactical knowledge that other managers have.

I agree wholeheartedly with this. Someone that the game just came so easily finds it much harder to relate to the players that needed fair amounts of work to refine their skills, much less the guy that's squeezing every ounce of ability out of themselves by virtue of pure, maniacal effort.

It's comparable to having Einstein trying to put himself into the shoes of your average college physics student.
