Chiefs Re-Signing Brandon Carr: What Do You Do - Page 14

There's about four more week of football ahead of us.

We've managed to wrap up Brandon Flowers during the season, Tamba Hali this offseason, DJ and Jamaal Charles last offseason...

This offseason, we have two very important players hitting free agency, and one franchise tag.

The tag goes to Bowe, no sweat. It's impossible to find franchise WRs, and when you have one, you must keep it. He's Top 10 at his position. Carr, for all his talent, is not. He's maybe top 25.

But what would you do if:

Carr (or, more likely, his agent) knows Carr is bound to be drastically overpaid on the free agent market, as young talent almost always is.

He knows the Chiefs desperately want Carr to stay on board. And the Chiefs have no leverage to keep him on board because their franchise tag is tied up with Bowe.

So knowing he has ALL the leverage in this situation, Carr opens big:

"I want 5 years, $50 million, $22 million guaranteed.

Just like my teammate, Brandon Flowers." (And other top flight corners like Johnathan Joseph, who got almost the exact same deal.)

You can haggle with Carr, but keep in mind, you're incredibly time-pressured, and Carr knows he has the leverage here. Even if you get him to come down, it's going to be nickels and dimes lower, not much else.

Do you (a.) sign Carr to a damn near identical deal to Brandon Flowers, or (b.)let Carr walk and just collect the 3rd or 4th round compensatory pick next year.

That's likely going to be our options at this point, folks.

I've been told we are close enough to the cash cap that we can't sign him yet but that talks have taken place.

Projected AR x CBA Percentage = Players Share of AR. This is called the Player Cost Amount. For 2011, that amount is $4,556,800,000 (roughly $142.4 M per team).

Cassel had a cash bonus of 7.5
Hali surely had a bonus, as did Flowers with their deals.

I've known the guy that told me that for about 15 years and he talks with Adam Teicher...if anyone wants more details I suggest twittering AT or asking him in an email.

I was told this right after Flowers signed his contract and have meant to follow up with it, but haven't had the time.

Carr has started every game for the Chiefs since arriving as a fifth-round draft pick in 2008 and is rounding out the final week of the one-year restricted free agent tender he signed in August.

“I’m just trying to seize the moment with my teammates and the guys that I’ve been here for four years with,” Carr said. “So many friendships were established and created here. I just want to make the most of it and go out there and have fun this Sunday

I say pay.. If Houston develops more next year and we can find some better DE if we stick with the 3/4 our corners will look better then they have been.. Especially with Berry back..

Find better DEs??? In case you didn`t know, Tyson Jackson and Glenn Dorsey are major reasons why our defense has been stellar lately.

I understand it's a business and I'm sure he is preparing for all outcomes, but....

He sounds like a guy that sounds like he may be playing his final game for KC.

Pioli !@#$ed this negotiation up before the season when he didn't lock him down like he should have, when his value was extremely low and he hadn't already set his 'ceiling' for corners.

Instead he did it in a backwards order, let it drag on and lost his leverage. Now the best decision he can make is to give him the market value so he can at least maintain leverage as it relates to Bowe.

Getting Carr signed makes the franchise tag on Bowe a done deal. So lets at least try to salvage something here by giving Carr what he's going to get anyway, giving it to him now and getting some negotiating leverage back with Bowe.

Pioli really did screw the pooch here.

I tend to agree.

In Bowe's case...you have Baldwin behind him who could very well replace what he gives you if he doesn't stick around.

We have nothing behind Carr.
Seems to me that signing Carr should've been the priority.

I'm going to be pretty bummed if Carr walks. I think he will though. Pioli is going to wanna play his boy, Arenas and move Brown in the slot.

Bonuses are pro-rated throught the time period of the contract
