I thought he said GRACEFULLY.

One thing I love about the WC (and soccer as a whole) is that the announcers do not seem to hide their excitement. They are as swept up in the moment as anyone. Can you think of another sport where this happens to the same extent?

They are both brilliant. I love the Mexican announcer because he's become the voice of soccer and he's a classic but he's always like that. I loved the British announcer because even though he's English and being paid by ESPN he seemed GENUINELY caught up in the moment and enjoying every second of it.

NCAA Tournament.

Gus Johnson.

Most home town College football and basketball announcers are that way too.

I love how here in the US, we like having a Brit do our soccer play by play. Americans just don't sound right, at least on play by play.

I wonder if these British fellas we have doing our games are big names in the UK for soccer announcing or if they are the Ian Eagles of their country. I would think it would be a pretty big honor to announce the games for your home country, especially when you invented the sport.

Ian Darke is pretty much THE VOICE of EPL, has been [with some detours, mainly boxing] since it started. Actually, he was 2nd in command early on, but the main voice on MNF [British EPL version].

Interesting, I wonder if ESPN backed a truck up to his door to do the gig, or if he wanted to broadcast to America.

Darke, interviewed about the call.

And Buck, he DOES say GO GO USA!!!

Darke: I think it got lost in all the noise and emotion. I think what I said was "go go USA" because it just came out, like I said before, it is somehow instinctively what came out.
Also clears up another small mystery for me

And I felt that maybe Harkes had been overwhelmed by the emotion, being a former player for the United States side, that you sort of jumped in and gave him a lifeline there. Is that what happened?
Darke: No, it isn't. No, it isn't. I'll tell you exactly what happened. John was pretty emotional, but he's a great professional broadcaster too, now. He wouldn't have dried up, certainly not at a moment like that. The first thing is we tried to let the moment breathe and not talk all over it, the celebrations, just let people absorb the atmosphere.
At that time, the other game had finished and they were joining us. I was getting instructions from the producer to welcome people from ESPN2. I'll admit, that message in all the hullabaloo, did get a bit garbled, understandably. So he told John to hold up a minute while I did that. I think I said something somewhere over the replay, "if you're just joining us…" I'll defend John, he didn't dry up, but was he emotional? You bet.
I remember thinking 'if you're just joining us. ? . ? Are you effing KIDDING me!!!'

I LOVE his voice but he does not get excited so the same play by play of Donovan's goal would not have sounded as sweet.
