Argh. Here's the thing - the guy's going to get savaged for his outing tonight but really, look at what we've seen here.

1) He's routinely getting inside on RHers. Most lefties are too chickenshit to do that or don't hide the ball well enough. His ability to do that bodes extremely well for his ability to succeed. Even at 90, he's not letting them get comfortable enough to turn around the inside fastball.

2) His changeup shows great arm speed. I can't pick it up at all and I'm usually fairly decent at that. I'd like to see a little more drop to it but he's thrown 3 or 4 that have nice tail and good drop, 2 for strikeouts.

3) He FINALLY threw a decent breaking ball to finish the 5th and you saw what he's capable of. That was a short, late break at 72 mph. If he can throw that ball with any consistency at all, these hitters couldn't get jumped up for the heat and he can coax grounders with that sinking fastball. We know he has a solid breaking ball because of his scouting reports and the fact that you don't put up a .9 WHIP at AAA without a solid breaker; the jump from AA to AAA is what separates men from boys - that's when the breaking balls actually break and the hitters can either hit them or they die. If this looping thing with no command was all he had, he'd get destroyed.

This start hasn't been a terribly successful one but I think it's important to look at some component parts here. His first start was a disaster across the board but there's been a fair amount to like in his evening tonight.
