Honestly, Im thinking balance.

We have to be good at both rushing the passer and stopping the run. The two ideal components to a good defense. Its always been that way and always will.

For example, we could be up 21-0 and force opposing teams into passing situations and yeah we are going to need that pass rush or the game could be 0-0 and teams will run the ball on us to keep our offense off the field and try to beat us by controlling the game in their favor.

At this point though, its best to staff over on that side of the ball. We’ve assembled a great coaching staff and thats a huge step in the right direction. The foundation on defense has been laid. Its just a matter of finding the right players that fit Spagnuolo’s defensive philosophy, scheme and that are well rounded complete players. Thats what we need imo.

There is a billion dollars in free agency this season and using your words, Collins is an "all pro young playmaker". He's going to become the highest paid safety and if he's not, why woudln't he?

Just build a good defense.

I don't really care how they do it.

If they fail to, they should get called on it.

I’m fine with it. That’s what a long-term with Ford would look like, and Flowers is a younger, healthier, better player.

unlike other positions, safety has been de-valued the last couple of years.

It's possible, but I don't know that I would expect that trend to reverse.

I suspect it's due to the over-valuation of the corner position.

If a guy like Steven Nelson is going to get $12 million or something, then I'd say it's askew.

You may think otherwise.

If we essentially swap Houston/Ford for Flowers/Collins, Veach is a beast. I think that would bring our defense a lot more balance, not to mention straight up better players at this point.

plus a high-ish pick in a Ford trade.

And I think it might be THE plan, with Daly and Spagnuolo on the staff.

That's a better defense for sure.

Plus, with Flowers, you could do something like:
Base
Flowers - Jones - Nnadi - Speaks

Subs:
Pass rush specialist - Jones - Speaks - Flowers

It sets you up to change your fronts and rotate guys to different spots like Spagnuolo has liked to do.

He’s kinda the opposite of Ford. He’s extremely versatile, and instead of excelling in one facet like Ford, he’s more a jack of all trades type. The type of player who offers a lot of flexibility.

I don’t get the Trey Flowers love either. Dude has never had double-digit sacks. We gonna pay $17 million for that production?

He seems like a scheme made player. And yeah I get that we have his DL coach, but I’m still hesitant.

Why would Bill not even franchise this guy?

And that's a perfectly reasonable response and expectation. I think some people are getting too hung up on a few positive statistics and are missing the fact that this unit has been without foundation, direction, and leadership.

I haven't seen with my own eyes ANYTHING that resembles a true team on that side of the ball in a very long time. A situation where the guys are trusting each other and every man playing with confidence regardless of skill or pay grade. I've seen defenses where guys who wouldn't rate for shit at PFF play like ****ing MONSTERS when they were called because the situation around them was cohesive and solid.
I think that's what we're trying to establish here.

This right ****ing here.

This defense, as currently constructed, is a collection of individual players who have no semblance of cohesion whatsoever.

You have a plethora of guys who are eating HUGE chunks of money that just aren't making a big enough difference to justify keeping them around. You're being paid like a premier pass rusher but our defense is ranked 31st? Sorry Justin, gotta go.

This is why I like the idea of getting guys who want to come in here with something to prove. Houston and Berry have gotten fat. They've gotten their money and you can see them resting comfortably on their laurels. Dee Ford will do the same thing if you extend him.

These guys have huge egos, are collecting massive paychecks, and all they did was submarine our chances at a championship last year. They can kick rocks and we won't miss them.

A culture change needs to occur and I think we'd be better off if these guys weren't part of it.
