A sobering reminder:

Paterno and other top Penn State officials covered up child sex abuse allegations against Sandusky for 14 years! They could have at least prevented Sandusky from using Penn State as a way to "groom" boys for Sandusky's purposes.

Sandusky is a seriously deranged individual, but I also wonder about the rest of them. The 267-page report, compiled by Freeh, makes it clear that they knew full well what was going on, but they still embraced Sandusky. They STILL let him on the Penn State grounds with young boys to commit his crimes.

How did they sleep at night knowing full well that sexual predators have the highest rate of recidivism?

If the NCAA does not gut Penn State’s football program – Penn State should build a statue of Sandusky with his pants around his ankles, standing directly behind Paterno, his arm raised in victory.

No, I'm not absolving anyone from punishment. But again, to be clear... people for whatever reason are acting like if Penn State doesn't get the death penalty, they get off scott free. I have no idea where that's coming from. They are getting hammered right now and deservedly so. And they will probably get deserved sanctions from the NCAA and nobody is disputing that they deserve some of those. But to the original point, I've said all along there is an institutional problem in the NCAA that encourages cover-up and compliance has become a laughingstock matter. Even harsh penalties against Penn State aren't going to make other programs comply.

While we don't know if Penn State will comply, the NCAA has the power to build assurances that they will. They can force Penn State to over-comply. To report everything with the understanding that if Penn State continues to break rules, the NCAA will take everything away from them. As for Penn State, you know they're motivated to comply. They can't afford another repetutational hit. They are in massive damage control mode right now. There is no way that massive compliance changes aren't a big part of that, because there is so much to lose if they screw up again.

No I'm saying that a coach majorly violating recruiting rules should affect anything that program has won as a result of such violations. Like, if/when it's found out that Kentucky won it's championship by violating recruiting rules, then they should have that championship vacated.

In Penn State's case, I don't think their entire football program should get the death penalty for something that didn't involve the actual game. I just firmly believe they should thoroughly investigate and punish the people that were involved in the coverup. Let the players, coaches, students, and fans move on without the assholes that were involved in this mess.

The report indicated Penn State failed to carry out its requirements under the Clery Act, a federal law which mandated universities and colleges that participate in FEDERAL financial aid programs to keep and disclose information about crime on and near their campuses.

Ten year suspension of all NCAA scholarships for Penn State. Any less is tolerance for this abomination.

I went to Penn State for my PhD. I was proud to be a Nittany Lion but more from the academic side than the athletic side. I think I went to 2 football games in 4 years in Happy Valley.

I've been on the fence about whether the entire school should be punished for the actions of a few. But I just heard on the news that Penn State is planning on keeping the statue of Joe Paterno up. Wow. They (officials and booster base) just don't get it. I was hoping for a proactive response. This isn't it. If Paterno was alive he should be facing criminal charges, and they are still idolizing him. Give them the death penalty. Maybe then they (officials and booster base) will start to understand the seriousness of this situation, and how it transcends something as trivial as football.

You might want to add: Graham Spanier, the ex-president, who at the same time he was serving as chair to the NCAA Division I Board of Directors, athletic director Tim Curley and vice president Gary Shultz, need to go to prison. The report was icing on the cake with enough evidence to convict them.

USC sanctions (though I'd up that to 3 years) plus compliance requirements. Take away ability to offer new football scholarships (and I agree, football players with commitments should have opportunities to pursue opportunities elsewhere. Take away bowl games for 3 years. It may sound small, but it will assure Penn State doesn't have a competitive football program for 5 years or so and it's going to lose the program millions of dollars.

There are ways to punish the football program harshly without also punishing the students and faculty who rely on the school, the majority of which did nothing wrong other than maybe overzealously root for scumbags... which is not illegal by any means.

The correct punishment is to do just about everything short of eradicating the football program, since this was the idol that all at that institution bowed down before.

And, frankly, disbanding the football program entirely should be on the table.

If you went to Penn State, then you also understand how good the educational program is there. The question is what happens when your football punishments transcend well beyond football and start affecting the academic programs. Where do you draw that line? There are a lot of good people like you that are there for good reasons. What about the thousands of people like you that rely on Penn State alone because they're the only school able to offer the quality education at in-state tuition?

By the way, I agree on the Joe Pa statue. They have to tear that down if they want to start fresh. It's embarrassing that they would want to keep it there. Maybe they're just waiting for some more of the dust to settle. I would hope that's what's going on.
