LNBS: What if Dorsey extends Alex for 3-4 years at backup compensation...

Please read op before voting.

I thought about this earlier today...

I highly doubt any team out there is going to give Alex very much in FA in terms of making a commitment to him as the starter. More than likely, he will have a hard time getting more than a 2 year deal on the open market, and not for top dollar.

Let's say John Dorsey sits down with Alex and they hammer out a deal that lowers Alex's cap this year and next and keeps him in KC as the backup to finish his career. Maybe the next 3-4 years.

Something like 4 years for 35-40 million dollars with a signing bonus similar to his 17m cap hit for 2017.

Cap hits by year (projected)

10
13
7
7

The deal would be contingent on Alex understanding that a big part of the contract is helping to groom Mahomes to be the starter and that the majority of the contract he will be played out as a backup.

Honestly, I think this would be a wise move for Alex and Dorsey.

It would create cap space for the team. That's huge with contracts for guys like Jones, Peters, Ford, Hill and others coming up in the next 3 years.
It would provide the team with great stability at the position, regardless of injuries. The team would need to get a backup. What better get backup than Alex Smith? Seriously, he would be the perfect premium backup for a Super Bowl team.

I don't think it's a good spot for Mahomes. When he takes over it is he and he alone.

there will be an NFL team willing to match what the Chiefs could do, but they would provide him a chance to win the job.

Would be a perfect fit. Otherwise we're left with Bray as the backup. now who would you rather have Bray or Smith who's 41-20 over the last 4 years. Mahomy will be on a rookie contract for 5 years anyway. And you eager beavers need to realize Smith is gonna start for the next 2 years anyway.

For those saying it's too much... you have to remember that he is starting in 2017 and maybe 1/2 of 2018 before PM2 takes over... paying 23m over that time frame for a starter and great mentor is a no brainer... and then you have the best backup in the league for 7m a year along with teacher the rest of the way and let Alex retire in a comfy way in 2020. You also have a cheap alternative and could go after a new QB in the draft
In 2019 /2020 if PM2 does not develop as expected.

I would do this in a heart beat unless he has trade value and we can get a
First or second round draft pick for him. (Also, with that contract, he is easily tradable at any point in time, say in 2019 if PM2 does pans out)

There will be a market for him for him to start. NY Jets would love to have him for example. He's not a great or even a good QB but he would stabilize the position for a team while they groom a newly drafted QB.

So, while there is starter money out there, I really don't see him playing at a backup price tag here. This will be his last year in KC. Dorsey will cut/trade him before the next draft.

"Alex Smith has the 3rd best record among QBs for the last 3 years".

That's the narrative according to the Alex fans.

But this team won those games, and would have won all but 3 or 4, or maybe 5 of those games with someone like Matt Moore, or hell, even Chase Daniel starting those games, and I can't rule out the possibility that they would not have won the same number.

So, no, I don't want to pay Alex Smith 7 mil to backup.

There are/will be cheaper, equal options available.

I would at least sign him and if Mahomy turns into the real deal then trade him for a draft pick to a suck team.

Why not just sign another veteran backup like Foles on a cheap deal? No team is paying a backup 10 million.

Its the main reason Foles got cut. You don't overpay for backups

When is the last time this scenario played out? QBs don't groom other QBs.

I don't want Andy to have the temptation or Mahomes three pressure of the former starter sitting right there, waiting for him to stumble.

It's a "Cortez burned his ships" moment. You get Alex off the roster to make it clear to the coaching staff, roster players, God and everyone that this team will succeed or fail with Pat Mahomes and he will be given every opportunity to prove he can do the former.

Just curious, but when our roster hardly changed from 2012 to 2013 (except for the addition of Smith and staff) how do you explain such a dramatic change in fortune without crediting our above average game managing QB ??
