I was never much of a star wars fan to begin with even though I was in the prime demographic when it came out.
I've always prefered Star Trek and still do although it's been getting harder and harder with the last few movies.

My wife, the two kids, and I watched episodes IV, V, VI, I and II in the two weeks preceding our trek to the theater to see episode III. We all had a great time doing it and the kids, in particular, really enjoyed the whole series.
I voted woo-hoo!

The best directing job Lucas ever did was American Graffetti IMO. An absolute classic flick. Lucas was never much of a writer or an actors director after that film. He did however become a great storyteller, Star Wars saga, Indiana Jones saga, Willow, etc......

I voted WOO HOO because there wasn't an option between WOO HOO and Eh.
The first three were WOO HOO. The second three were Eh. |

I gave it an Eh....
When the first one came out, I loved it. It was way cool. I hadn't seen anything like it. I drove home from the theatre imagining I was an Xwing pilot blowing up the cars in front of me. I was about 19 years old. The second one was great as well, and I agree with others that it is the best of the six. But looking back now, I see them as hokey, the acting superficial. I don't think they hold up to time as well as.....say.... The Indiana Jones movies. I saw all of the six in the theatre, more as a tribute to the way I felt at age 19, rather than the quality of the film.

So how do ya'll feel about all six being re-released in 3D? Will you go? What about the constant tampering Lucas has done with the original trilogy? (I read a rumor somewhere, I think on CP, that Lucas will redo or add to all of the lightsaber battles using CG.)

Just another "gimmick" for Lucas to milk more money from this cashcow. Im one of the biggest Star Wars fans alive, but i wont be paying any more money for yet another "new" version of these films. Enough already Lucas!

I don't believe the 3D versions will begin to be released until 2007. This means if he spaces it out enough, I'll probably be stupid enough to pay to see them in the theater again.

I went Woo-Hoo. The early trilogy affected my young mind in a way that makes sci-fi a love of mine. The prequels were ok, with the RotS obviously being the best.
If I had my way, Lucas would have directed the CGI/action shots, and Irvin Kershner would have directed the dialogue/actual movie shots. |

I've still never seen a Star Wars movie in its entirety. I've seen parts of ESB ("Holy crap, it's Billy Dee Williams!") and Episode 1, but aside from that, all I know about Star Wars is basically from pop culture and fellow geeks on the intraweb discussing it.
I don't think I've ever seen a Bond movie in its entirety, either. Played the shit out of Goldeneye 007 on the N64, though...

The first 2 were so good, and had such an impact on my life ... I sometimes pity kids like gochiefs who are big SW fans, God bless 'em, but they just don't know -- will never know -- what it was like in May 1977 to sit there and see that star destroyer fill the screen for the first time. To be 11 years old, and the last sci-fi movie you saw was "Logan's Run," and all of sudden comes "Star Wars" ...
And then "Empire," which was a complete movie, laying out so much plot and character insight into the vast backstory. It's a crime that Lucas forgot where he came from, ignored/forgot what made the originals so good. I'm close to saying WOO-WOO for the first 2, they were that good and tower over the rest. But the subsequent 4 really threaten to drag the whole franchise down to an "eh." |

Definitely a Woo hoo. Except for the deplorable Phantom Menace I have found them all eminantly entertaining, and even the Phantom Menace was worth the price of 1 ticket (though barely).
I would rate the first three much higher than the last three. Lucas really does not belong in the directors chair because I don't believe he really knows good acting from crap acting. Man is a special effects and techno creative genius however. |

Im really curious what the next phase of Lucas's career will hold for him? He has said that he wants to go back to making small, independent personal films like he did before Star Wars. I think deep down, hes probably glad to finally get the Star Wars monkey off his back.
