Suckers. Here's the best way to save $ on gas. Don't buy any, 'cause you can't!

Next time I pull in, my friendly station manager is likely to say, "Gas all gone for today. You come back two days, two days. I have the new gas then, all new gas."

Spot gas shortages at Del. service stations reported

04/21/2006

Motorists today are reporting scattered incidents of Delaware service stations running out of gasoline, either entirely or for some grades.

The reports come two days after the U.S. Energy Information Administration warned that spot shortages could occur as a result of changeover to new fuel additives at the same time as consumption was increasing.

At least six service stations in the U.S. mid-Atlantic region were out of fuel yesterday because of a region-wide changeover to ethanol-blended gasoline, according to the AAA, the nation's largest motoring club.

The switchover is part of a nationwide phase-out by May of the additive MTBE, or methyl tertiary butyl ether, in reformulated gasoline. Ethanol serves as a replacement for MTBE.

The filling stations were located in the Philadelphia and Wilmington, Del., regions, AAA spokesman Geoff Sundstrom said. Service stations and fuel terminals can't move to ethanol-based fuel until they empty and clean their tanks, a process that can take as long as two days, he said.

“These outages are not unexpected,” Sundstrom said. “Consumers ought not overreact.”

Drivers can expect to see some filling stations run out of fuel along the East Coast over the next two or three weeks, Sundstrom said.
