I just went through everything on Turbo Tax and it was fairly simple. One question I had though is pertaining to home improvements and my new mortgage. I spent $13,000 on a new roof and chimney but I couldn't find any place to take advantage of this. Is this an expense that should help with my taxes? Also, it asked me for fees associated with the refinance of my rental home but not fees associated with the mortgage on my newly purchased home. Should there be a place to take advantage of that as well?

Why should you have to pay to have you freaking taxes done? The government should do them for you, they take the money, and you have to pay somebody to figure out your taxes. This is the first year I have to do my taxes and I don't know what to do. I always used to send my shit to my parents and be like here u go

How on Earth am I going to remember what I bought off the internet and what it's sales tax was? Are you kidding me? I better claim my recreational poker winnings of like 4K too, ya right.

Oklahoma does that (I think last year was the first year). I'm not sure really how they will know what I buy off of ebay. I was thinking that last year I just paid a flat fee but I really can't remember. BTW, I used to take my taxes to preparers. Last time I did, I took them to H&R Block (Back in 97 or 98). They ended up figuring that I owed something like $2k to Feds + Penalty AFTER I had made my estimated payments all year. Cost me another $250 to have them do my taxes and tell me this. A guy in our church had a copy of Turbo Tax. We ran my taxes through his program and though I still owed (Thanks to Prez C changing filing status for ministers) it wasn't anywhere near as much as H&R figured. Since then I've bought a copy of TT every year. This year's interview is one of the longest yet as far as deductions. An accountant that manages your account all year might get you more breaks, but I doubt a tax prep company would do much better than Turbo Tax.

This year has the most questions concerning taxes? And this administration wanted to simplify taxes? No wonder the IRS is giving until the 17th of April to send it in!

If you're just going to go to H&R Block then do it yourself out of a box. The monkeys they have working at those stores are useless.
I personally have quite a hairy business ownership chain, which all folds around to my personal stuff, with reimbursements going both directions, etc. etc. I pay a lot more than the ~$150 you pay H&R C**k, but I pay a lot less in taxes than you guys. ![]() |
