Where does eveyone stand on smoking bans?

I think it should be up to the owner, and would even be willing to have it up to the owner if you have to be 21 to enter. City wide is bullshit IMO

Ditto on all counts. I hate the smell of cigarettes since I quit but I don't begrudge the right of a business owner to set his own rules.

If I still went to bars and still smoked I think I would quit going to bars. Going outside every time I wanted a smoke would be a royal pain in the ass. Better to buy a 6-pack and stay home.

So you are ok with the rights of a owner to be allowed to run his own place as he wants taken away? What other rights are you willing to give up?

I'm personally fine with the ban...mainly because I'm a total wuss when it comes to being around smoke. I won't go out to places that allow it. So basically an owner is either going to lose my business or maybe the business of a smoker. A smoker could, in theory, at least go outside and light up. I'm not going to walk out of a concert for 15 minutes to try to find fresh air...then go back into the cloud.

I understand the freedom of choice argument and I'm not 100% comfortable with legislating choice out of existence...but I'll be selfish in this case and say I'm OK with it.

Way back when when I waited tables I always wanted the smoking section. The smokers were usually the drinkers so they ran up bigger checks. They also usually tipped a bigger %, I assumed the liquor loosened up their wallets. A table of smoking, drinking women tended to be especially lucrative. Of course, that was before a carton of cigs cost a day's pay.

Preferably a minimum of 20 feet from the door. For a while in KC you couldn't walk in or out of a building without going through a cloud of smoke.

All that matters is what HE wants.

The sooner you come to grips with that fact, the better off he'll be. And that's all that really matters, you know.

I respect you being honest, however where does it stop? You like this right being taken away because you hate smoke. At what point is rights being taken away a problem?

I don't really have a problem with smoking bans that responded to the "take it outside" call from non-smokers. But, when the bars did what they had to do to keep business open and created patios and outside areas for smokers, I do have a problem with the latest calls to prohibit smoking in all outside areas too, because non smokers want to come outside too.

Bars complied with a law and found a way to keep smokers, who by the way, I have found to buy more drinks, and actually tip better than non-smokers. And their reward is that the legislation is just going to get tougher to appease a loud non-smoking advocacy (many of whom don't actually go to bars.)

It's the American way. Not just getting what you want, but using govt's unique ability to use force so you can make everyone else want it too.
