Report: USC Contacts Herm About Job Opening
by Joel Thorman on Jan 11, 2010 8:46 AM CST 14 comments

Over the weekend, I passed along some rumors that had been floating around regarding the head coach opening at USC and Herm Edwards. A few folks thought the former Chiefs head coach would be a candidate at USC.

Today, those rumors are turning into reports.

Scott Wolf of the Los Angeles Daily News reports USC has contacted Herm regarding the job.

"USC also contacted former Kansas City Chiefs coach Herm Edwards, who was recommended by Syracuse athletic director Daryl Gross, who previously worked under athletic director Mike Garrett at USC," the report says.

"Edwards might be the most controversial choice because of his primarily NFL background."

While I think Herm has the ability to walk into living rooms across the country and recruit the top high school athletes, I do wonder if he could still be successful doing everything the "right way". The perception of Herm is one who seemingly does things the "right way", and college football is a bend-the-rules job at times, so that would be one concern I would have.

Other NFLers interested include Jack Del Rio, currently head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher reportedly said he wasn't interested.

Herm appears on 810 WHB on Monday mornings so I'll see if he was asked about these reports

You need to come up with some new material. It's just more of the same old tiresome "talking points".

Herm Not Talking About USC Job

by Joel Thorman on Jan 11, 2010 10:11 AM CST 3 comments
Herm Edwards appeared on 810 WHB this morning, as he does every Monday morning, and the hosts asked him about the reports out there that he was a potential candidate for the USC job.
A quick Google search for "herm edwards usc" shows over 40,000 results (and the top three are from us). Herm reminded them that he had no internet access (still can't believe that).
"I've heard nothing," he said laughing a little. "That's nice. That's very nice. We gotta talk about pro football so we'll leave it at that."
Wait a minute. Is this the same Herm that could seemingly talk for hours on any given subject?
I think this definitely gives credence to those reports.

I think Jeff Fisher would be a really good college coach, especially at USC.

They do need a youth movement. Expect a few preschoolers to be on the starting lineup next year.

He's just a placeholder. Carroll will spend 2 years at Seattle...flop and then they'll fire Herm and hire Pete back.

Herm will do well in college. USC is a special case in that it's so high profile and has the potential to recruit at such a high level. Herm will be able to recruit and his players won't tire from his style of coaching.

His big thing is going to be a willingness to adopt an aggressive, QB-friendly offense that Pac-10 kids in the West will be want to play in. My guess is that he does at USC what we were hoping he'd do at KC, which is embrace a balanced team.

As an Arizona fan, I can't help but be happy with Pete leaving, no matter who they bring in.
