Royals Sign Rick Ankiel

Former Cardinal Rick Ankiel, 30, is headed to the Kansas City Royals, the Kansas City Star is reporting.
Ankiel signed a one-year deal for $3.25 million with a mutual option for 2011 worth $6 million.
Ankiel, who started as a pitcher for the Cardinals but transitioned to the outfield after a well-documented loss of control as a pitcher after the 2000 playoffs. He hit .264 with 25 homers in 2008 but dropped to .231 with 11 in 327 at-bats last season.
The Cards have committed to Colby Rasmus in center and didn’t consider re-signing Ankiel.

As a Cards fan, I always liked him and wish him luck in Blue!

Well, he does suck. Or did last year. If he's anything he was a couple seasons ago, then Royals got a bargain. If he was that good the Cardinals probably would have kept him.

This is already being discussed in the Royals thread. We keep all the Cardials talk in one thread(for the most part). Why did this need its own thread?

In the Cardinals thread a while back, someone (I think it was Frazod) made a great point about Ankiel at the plate while he was struggling. He seemed every pitch to guess pitch and location and if he didn't get both right, he was useless.

Dayton Moore said in a radio interview that the goal for this offseason was to get as many 0-3 service year guys with upside, then see how they perform next season. Not exactly comforting to an anxious, uneasy fanbase.

On a serious note...I think the Royals have made significant upgrades defensively for next year....at least we got that going for us...which is nice.
