Anyone know anything about College Station/Bryan TX.?

Anyone ever lived or live there... visited... have family there or nearby?

How about Galveston?

My daughter wants to go to college at Texas A&M because they are the top rated school for her field of interest and part of my research is simply asking around... and since I know no one there or who has been there I thought I'd try here. And as hard as it may be to believe she wants me to move there with her... or near her I should say. I can research my own career choices myself and have been... just looking for a general or even specific opinion of the area.

Any serious input is appreciated. Telling me it's the anti-freeze capital of the world is fine too although not as helpful.

Thanks in advance.

How is the housing market... if you know? Renting an apartment is probably the way I'd go at least to start. Do rental rates compare favorably to say around the KC area? Again... if you know.

Housing market is pretty cheap. I know several people whose parents bought a house in College Station and are planning on renting it out after they graduate because it's possible to make a profit.

However, there are more expensive areas on the outskirts especially around the country club where houses can run into seven figures.

I've never actually rented an apartment in KC so I can't tell you exactly the comparable pricing. I moved from Oregon which is much more expensive. I lived in two apartments while in College Station.

The first apartment was $480/month, brand new, and fully furnished with utilities/cable included. However, I had a couple roommates. I believe 1 bedroom apts. there ran around $800/month.

My second apartment was $600/month, utilities included, but no furnishing. This was a 2 bedroom on a 6-month lease (12-month was quite a bit cheaper).

Any good radio stations in College Station/Bryan? Now I know what you might consider good and me could be vastly different... you're a college age person I assume and I'm 42. Any stations that really rule the place?

I listen primarily to sports talk radio so I can't really tell you. I only listen when I'm driving as well so didn't get a whole lot of exposure.

Crime under control for the most part?

Hardly any crime at all. There's a bit more crime in Bryan but if you live in College Station you don't need to worry.

Did you like TA&M a lot? What did you like or not like?

I really enjoyed my time there but I went there for my master's degree so I spent most of my time studying. The football games were a blast (their student section is ridiculously loud, especially in the big games). People tend to be nice and helpful. I definitely do not regret going there. Also, the movie theater has extremely cheap matinee pricing ($3.50).

There wasn't anything in particular that I didn't enjoy. Some professors were less than perfect but you're going to find that at any school.

As far as not being a ton of excitment that's not a problem. The biggest city I've ever lived in was Topeka and we live in a town of 42k now... neither of us requires 24/7 entertainment heh. She'll have plenty to do being in college and my career field puts me in social situations without looking for them really.

Thanks for your help.

NP. Good luck to you and your daughter in your search.

TAMU has a PBS radio station. http://kamu.publicbroadcasting.net/home.html

Also, you'd get to drink with Bob Dole about 4 times a year when he's in town for meetings!

The sea was angry that day my friends, like an old man trying to

I got about fifty-feet out and then suddenly the great beast
appeared before me. I tell ya he was ten stories high if he was a

"Easy big fella!" And then as I watched him struggling I realized
something was obstructing his breathing. From where I was standing
I could see directly into the eye of the great fish!

Mammal.

Whatever.

Then from out of nowhere a huge title wave lifted, tossed like a cork and I found myself on top of him face to face with the blow-hole. I could barely see from all of the waves crashing down on top of me but I knew something was there so I reached my hand and pulled out the obstruction!

What is that a Titleist? A hole in one eh.

Can't argue with this although DFW is good for business trips.

When I was 14 years old I went to a golf camp at AM and stayed in a pretty nice dorm. On Sat. night our counselor said he didn't care what we did as long as were back by 10:15. So four of us older boys took off walking and left the campus which was a no no. We found a little mall type area with a pizza place that showed cartoons on movie screens about the place. Anyways before we got out of there all four of us 14 year old boys walked up to the counter and purchsed a pitcher of beer. Then we went next door to the movie theatre to watch Damien which was the sequel to the original Omen. We set there for a while and then we decided to go back to the pizza place for more beer. We made it back to the dorm at pretty much 10:15. Drunk of course. The Texas heat as rough that next day for hungover 14 year old boys.

That's all I know of College Station, Texas.

My Uncle is a professor down there. I've been a few times. Nice little town, good school. Despite what the self-important swinging dicks from UT say, it's a good place to live.

Houston is a complete shithole though. I will agree with that sentiment.
