Mock Up The Draft! Vol. 2012

I'm making this thread a running thread throughout the year, for my entertainment primarily. You're welcome to join at any time.

Realistically, it's important that you address whatever assumptions you're going to make for your mock.

Particularly:

1. How well did the team do? (This will determine where we're selecting.)
2. How well did Cassel do? (This will determine our future direction.)
3. Which of the following players are we going to resign/let go (this will determine our needs for the draft):
  • RB Thomas Jones
  • FB Le'Ron McClain
  • WR Dwayne Bowe
  • WR Jerheme Urban
  • TE Leonard Pope
  • OT Jared Gaither
  • OT Barry Richardson
  • C Casey Wiegmann
  • NT Kelly Gregg
  • DE Wallace Gilberry
  • ILB Jovan Belcher (RFA)
  • ILB Brandon Siler
  • ILB Andy Studebaker
  • CB Brandon Flowers
  • CB Brandon Carr
  • CB Travis Daniels
  • S Jon McGraw
  • K Ryan Succop (RFA)
4. Any other information you care to share, or that might influence the Chiefs draft in some way.

You can speculate trades if you wish. I would advise against it, but it's a free country.

I just like the thought of our NTs being Powe and Poe.

True. Though I project Richardson will basically be the starter at RB, and Hawkinson would ideally take over RT by 2013, taking a year behind Gaither because he needs to get much stronger.

Poe is just hedging our bets in case Powe doesn't pan out (doesn't Poe and Powe sound great?), although even if that were the case, Powe probably still has to have someone reliable take 40% of the snaps.

So that's the first three rounders, plus I'd imagine a ton of snaps for Boykin. But we're at the point where we have to reinforce the depth at the interior OL and S.

This idea that "RT isn't worth a 1st" is totally fucking stupid and one of CP's dumbest rhetorics. All OL are worth a 1st so long as they project as 10-year starters. Just look at the best run teams in the league and you'll see plenty of all OL positions in the 1st. Not one of the model teams (NE, PIT, PHI, GB, etc.) has ignored it -- actually, it's quite the opposite as they've all added tackles, guards AND centers in R1 the last couple drafts.

I don't know who the hell I'd draft over Richardson, but I know I'd consider positions the Chiefs actually need help at, including RT and ILB.

(All the above refers to mid-late 1sts, obviously.)

Pretty stupid post.

1. All OL are worth a 1st if they're 10-year Pro Bowlers. Otherwise, only LTs are automatically worth a 1st. You can find 10-year starters all over the draft at OL.

2. The best run team in 2010 was the Kansas City Chiefs. They had one 1st rounder, three UDFAs, and a 6th rounder.

Honestly, it would not surprise me to see the Chiefs go DE with their first round pick if Glenn Dorsey regresses this season. We're losing Gilberry and the rookie would have a season behind Dorsey.

He looked disasterous in the preseason.

I fear that too.

If that were the case, CB in the 1st would be the clear cut decision. There is some pretty sick talent at corner.

Te'o if a better all around LB'er than Vontae. Vontae just hits hard and kicks and screams loud. He's a cheap shotting bitch. I like to watch his highlight videos and then realize that he wasn't the one making the play most times. Usually someone else is making the tackle and he flies in and smacks them too. **** Vontae.

What makes you people, yes, YOU PEOPLE, think that Pioli will just let a damned good CB go without getting something for him? Better to trade him for a 3rd or 4th than let him walk.

Burfict isn't antithetical to the right 53. I have a friend who happens to know Coach Erickson. Coach Erickson indicated to him that Burfict was a hard-working, all-effort, team player with an attitude on the field. Yes, he punched a dude at practice, but that isn't actually all that uncommon. Yes, he gets called for personal fouls. But how many ref crews got fired from the PAC 10 last year as a result? 11! I think Burfict is just what we need. Well, and a little Luck.

3. The Chiefs lose: Tyler Palko, Thomas Jones, Casey Wiegmann, and Kelly Gregg.

4. Bowe gets PAID. Carr and Flowers both get PAID.

5. Moeaki and Siler both return healthy and ready to play.

6. Cassel plays decently enough through a meandering 8-8 season. 25 TDs, 10 INTs. He faces a make-or-break year in 2012.

Let the games begin.

1. RB Trent Richardson, Alabama

What could a better pick in the middle of the 1st could there be? OLB is locked down by Houston and Hali, we've got three good WRs (assuming Baldwin comes along) and McCluster's apparently a factor downfield, now. The value isn't at RT in the middle of the first, and Pioli isn't going to take a QB.

2. NT Dontari Poe, Memphis

A reach perhaps, and out of character for Scott Pioli, who prefers big schoolers at all times. But the nose tackle waters are getting thinner and thinner, and going into the season with Powe as your only serious nose tackle won't do. Poe adds a huge body for goal line formats, and can provide some great depth.

3. OT/G Tanner Hawkinson, Kansas

Hawkinson is tailor-made for the zone blocking system. He will need a season or two in an NFL strength-and-conditioning program, but he seems to have long arms and excels in pass protection. He can switch in to guard, too, which will be desperately needed in 2012.

4. WR Jarrett Boykin, Virginia Tech

I really don't like the offense Boykin plays in, and I think it suppresses us from seeing him as a reliable receiver with great quickness and reliable hands. The WR corps needs depth, and we need another receiver should the Chiefs want to feature smaller, quicker packages with Breaston and McCluster to compliment the huge WR packages with Bowe, Baldwin, and Moeaki.

5. OG/C Moe Petrus, Connecticut

An underrated center for the Huskies, he played a season at guard before wrecking shit for Jordan Todman the past couple years at center. Again, depth is needed along the offensive line.

6. SS Harrison Smith, Notre Dame

It's been two seasons and the Chiefs still don't have a viable guy to spell Eric Berry. Hopefully that will change with Smith, a guy who's done next to nothing before exploding last year with 7 interceptions. Like almost all ND players, he's smart with high character, and features 4.5 speed.

7. QB Stephen Garcia, South Carolina

A game manager from the SEC playing in what has become a big time program over the past couple of years. Pioli takes a flyer.

Love the Trent Richardson to give us the best 1-2 punch at RB.

If Cassel fails this year, I hope we make a QB more of a priority than the 7th though.

So let me get this straight reerun, we have probably the best and if not, no less than top three most explosive, young, and locked up RBs in the entire NFL and you want to use our first pick on the same position? That is completely moronic, we need to use that pick on ILB, NT, OT, TE, or even WR. Everyone seems to be counting on Baldwin and while I am excited by his potential, he fell to our pick due to character concerns and has done nothing so far but prove his doubters right. Our young TE while impressive so far, has also proven why he lasted until the 3rd round already. Our tackles both suck at this point (mediocre at best).

We have our lighting, a thunder type back can easily be found in the 4th and later. This team has so many holes especially on the O-line that need to be filled first.

You are the equivalent of a Pats or Colts fan five years ago saying "We should pick a QB with our first rounder"

Some assumptions of the following mock:

1. Injury riddled and against a tough schedule, Chiefs go 7-9 and finish a distant 2nd in the AFC West.

2. Cassel had a shitty year, throwing 24 TDs to 17 INTs, a whiff shy of 3,000 yards. Not entirely his fault, though, as Bowe was his only weapon until Baldwin came on strong late in the season, and his protection was shitty because Gaither didn't come in until Week 10 to solidify RT.

3. We tender ILB Jovan Belcher and K Ryan Succop.

4. We franchise WR Dwayne Bowe.

5. We resign to ILB Andy Studebaker and CB Brandon Flowers to multi-year deals.

6. We resign FB Le'Ron McClain, WR Jerheme Urban, TE Leonard Pope, OT Jared Gaither, ILB Brandon Siler, CB Travis Daniels, & S Jon McGraw to one-year deals.

7. We let go the following players: RB Thomas Jones, OT Barry Richardson, C Casey Wiegmann, NT Kelly Gregg, DE Wallace Gilberry, CB Brandon Carr.

Let the games begin.

1. DE Jared Crick, Nebraska

Based on the 2011 preseason, Glenn Dorsey looks awful. If that's the case, the Chiefs may not resign him after the 2012 season. This is the best 3-4 prospect as of now, a guy to groom for a year, as Pioli loves to do, behind a pair of established veterans. At the very least, this is great insurance in case Dorsey picks it up and Jackson re-emerges as a weak link.

2. CB Chase Minnifield, Virginia

The Chiefs in this scenario let Brandon Carr go for whatever reason; my theory is that Pioli simply doesn't like paying big money to two corners. So he takes advantage of the sick value at CB that's going to wreck big boards in 2012. Minnifield's size and ability would make him a first rounder most years. This year, he could be like the 7th off the board.

3. OT Blake DeChristopher, Virginia Tech

A great right tackle prospect out of V-Tech, DeChristopher is Barry Richardson-like in the run game. A destroyer of worlds from whistle to whistle. He will, however, sit for a year behind Gaither so he can work on his passblocking.

4. NT John Jenkins, Georgia

Jenkins will have played in the Georgia defense for a year after tearing shit up in junior college. If he performs admirably, he might take advantage of the thin NT crop and enter the draft. Jenkins is 350 pounds and the Georgia scheme is the KC scheme.

5. WR Marvin Jones, California

Jones is like a poor man's Jordy Nelson. He's not particularly fast, nor particularly huge, but he's got a decent size-speed combination, he's a reliable route-runner with reliable hands. Everybody's always looking for the Next Big Thing at WR; Pioli is just looking for solid depth.

6. OG/C Moe Petrus, Connecticut

Versatile interior lineman is a great fit for the ZBS for run blocking.

7. S Janzen Jackson, Tennessee

Jackson has a ton of character issues but don't be surprised if this elite talent is a Chiefs pick late in the draft. Few teams will want to mess with him, but if Eric Berry gives him a glowing endorsement to Pioli and says something to the effect of "I'll take him under my wing." Pioli sees no harm in a troubled 7th rounder with gigantic upside, and takes a flyer.
