get a number at text free pinger, run the app through a web browser or put it on your smartphone. Text them, get an idea of who they are, and go from there.

We had a yellowpages scam claim that my wife had signed up with them and were trying to extort us for like $800 bucks. They had a doctored recording of my wife saying, "Yes" to a question which they scrubbed to make it sound like she'd agree to their terms.

After going absolutely apeshit on the phone to them a few times, I finally just lawyered up and was more than happy to direct a fraction of the funds the scammers wanted to a friend who is a lawyer to issue them a cease and desist.
