Word of Advice to the Young Guys

For you guys who are 30 or younger and are Royals fans.

ENJOY THIS RIDE.

In 1985 I was 26 years old. I had seen the Royals pushed down by the Oakland A's, then the New York Yankees. Then the Royals got to the big dance in 1980; Brett got Roids (not steroids, Ass Roids) and Amos Otis blew out his ankle. That Sack o Shit Dick with Ears Pete Rose and his Phillies team mates sent us all home in a deep depression. Not until 1985 was the mountain top reached, in an epic battle with our cross state rivals the St. Louis Cardinals.

Then 29 years of nuthin.

29 years.

If you would have told me in 1985 the Royals would go almost 30 years without winning squat, I would have said you were insane. In 1990, the Royals had BOTH Cy Young winners (1989 AL and NL winners) on their roster.
The Royals got Bo Jackson. The Royals had a hall of fame 3rd Baseman.

Nothing.

For 29 ****ing years.

So my advice to you is ENJOY EVERY PITCH, EVERY MOMENT, EVERY GAME. There are no guarantees this will ever happen again in your lifetime. I've been very lucky to see it happen twice in my lifetime. I hope you young guys will get to feel the amazing thrill of having your team win a Worlds Championship.

And I pray if we do win -and I pray we DO win- that you won't have to wait 29 years more to see it happen again.

Go Royals. Bring it home. Be Champions.

I don't mind the new age Royals fans. I'm only 25 myself. But it's so annoying hearing people from outside KC call everyone a bandwagon fan. I've been following this team since I was born. I've lived with the complete yearly shitfest. I'm glad New York and LA teams don't know what going your entire life without a winning baseball team feels like. They can **** themselves.

I got into the Royals in the mid 90's. Just in time to watch them monumentally suck in 100-loss seasons, but not quite in time to see them play worth a damn.

I'm not as old a fan as George, but I think I've waited long enough for this.

Everybody knows that the Cards have been my team since I was a young toddler. However, I don't get the cross state hate. I root for all teams that represent Missouri, unless it's a head to head matchup. Go Royals and make Missouri proud!

I was a sophomore in HS in '85.......the ONE and ONLY time I ever called my dad at work, was the day of the parade, asking him if it was ok to ditch school for the parade.

Will never forget it.

For the guys in their 20s or 30s with kids....if we win, make sure you get your kids to the parade - it's something they'll never forget!

I'm enjoying every single minute of it.

The Royals were my first sports love. The strike in 1994, of course the Chiefs getting Montana and being good in the 90s swung my favorite team to them. But the Royals were my first true love and seeing them finally come back its glorious.

I mentioned this in the game thread yesterday... but in the last 40 seasons, the Royals now have more American League pennants than anyone but the Yankees. The Red Sox are the only other team with 4 in that span. So in a way we're all pretty lucky. Even if you go back to the expansion era, only 2-3 other teams jump ahead of us.

But as someone who came in at the end of George Brett's run and never got to live through the 70s... you never would've guessed it'd take this long to find success, so the last two years have been amazing. I think that's why I wasn't even that nervous going into game 6 last night. This team had played its behind off to get homefield, and here were with a great team and two shots to win it. It was fun and I was going to enjoy it.

And the Rockies and A's as well.... Not because they're accustomed to winning. But, rather the cities they represent ****ing suck.

If you just want to think about it since they became a franchise in 1969, Yankees, A's, Red Sox and Orioles are the only teams to win the pennant more than the Royals. Thats with 29 year suckage in there.

dunno gblow, the championships are few in our lives. i never won one in baseball or football. my right arm socket is ****ed from all the balls i threw. my ankles are ****ed from tackles or slides. i have more pride in the games i played in than the ones i watch. maybe we root for the little bit of us that could play but didn't.

Yeah, that's pretty amazing. And then you think about how the Twins owned our division for several years, or all the great Oakland A's teams since Beane took over, or all the good Mariners teams, including the one that won 116 games and had the best regular season of modern times... and those teams never made it this far, and struggled to even win playoff series. What the Royals have done two years in a row is tough.

Baseball fandom is easy to turn on and off. It's incredibly boring when there's a dozen games a day every day for half the year. It's incredibly exciting when every pitch and stolen base counts.

From May to the end of September, it's like tubing down a lazy river. Fun to do every once in a while with a six pack at your side.

In October, if your favorite team is involved, it's suddenly the X-Games on meth.
