MELLINGER: Should The Chiefs Move On From Smith?

Yep, another Alex Smith thread - but a solid and fair read from Sam Mellinger.

Quote:
The only way forward is through brutal honesty and realistic self-evaluation. No sport moves as quickly, or with such little empathy, as the NFL.

Only fools assume what happened in the past will continue to happen in the future, unless that assumption is “the Patriots will win every year from now until armageddon because Bill Belichick is an alien.”

And so it is that this particular group of Chiefs players and executives attempt to solve a puzzle that no group of Chiefs players and executives has solved since 1970, which is so long ago CBS erased the tape to save money:

Get to the Super Bowl.

And it’s hard to believe that will happen without addressing the quarterback situation.

This is not a call for the Chiefs to walk away from Alex Smith, even though this is the first offseason since his arrival in which they could do it without a fatal salary cap hit. This is a call for them to look, to try, to make sure they don’t have access to a better option — whether that’s Tony Romo in a trade, Deshaun Watson in the draft (which would almost certainly require a trade up), or anything else.

You can really tell that the offense has struggled bc of playcalling, but thats Alex's fault. Andy is an elite gameplanner for the first series of a game, but then teams figure out how to defend our plays.

When your QB doesn't provide enough downfield stability, everyone on the defense comes up and stacks the box.

That's also why the running game has stalled.

If anything, the trainers and coaches have to put the parts of the 'watch' in position to take advantage of our assets, more than breaking everything up and building a new watch.
No question, but that's what makes that missed shot downfield so painful.

We don't need much from our QB, but we need that. We need the gimmes to actually be gimmes.

Because if they were, this team goes to the SB. If he hits that throw, I'm absolutely convinced that the Chiefs win that game and potentially by double digits. It changes the feel of the entire team and changes how the Steelers deal with the sideline routes.

Do you agree that we win that game with Kirk Cousins under center? And as someone else mentioned, I'm pretty certain we'd have won that game with Trevor Siemian taking snaps. We win that game with a bunch of non-elite guys.

He's fallen to the wrong side of 'just right'. The middle of the road chiefs fans realize that this team could win a championship with adequate, not elite, quarterback play. The only question is whether or not we think we'll get adequate.

I'm unwilling to give the person that passed on that throw another shot at it. Because if they are in the post-season again next year, there will be a point in some game where he has to hit that throw and I'm no longer confident that he'll even attempt it.

What receiver was that? Not that it matters but man, so many wasted opportunities with Smith. I'm ready to move on.

Funny. I now remember the idea being floated of trading the number one overall for Cousins, but hey Eric Fisher

Seems you are blaming the entire loss all on Smith which is pretty silly.

Kirk Cousins? I thought we were talking about a QB who could put the team on his shoulders for an important game. Didn't he JUST shit his franchise out of a playoff spot a few weeks back?

No. But I am saying that there are probably 20 QBs in the league that make the play there that could've easily won us that game.

At some point in the post-season you'll need your QB to step up and make a big play that either wins a game or at least sparks the rest of the team into stepping up and winning the game. Our guy didn't.

That was a teamwide failure but the person that was most capable of nudging the team past it - the guy that had the ball in his hands more than any other player on the squad - didn't do it because he was scared.

To me, that's simply not something I want repeat and I see nothing to suggest that it's not exactly what we'll have happen.

Alex could have pulled us out of hope we were in. He missed Tryeek twice and Maclin once. That's 14 damn points we pissed away.

Sure ____ player dropped a pass and _____ players struggled with blocking at times, but the point is that Alex had every opportunity to lead this team and put them over the top and he didn't bc he was scared.

That was Tyreek and it wasn't the only time Alex missed him wide open downfield.

He didn't miss Maclin. Maclin turned the wrong way on a high school route.

We've been over this already. Repeating it doesn't make it true.

He's a pussy no doubt unfortunately even with Siemen or Bonehead Kurt yeah maybe we win that game but we probably don't beat Brady. I want to bring the Trophy down Main Street and this team would have done that with David Carr. Once again we pass on a franchise QB. Very very frustrating. I just don't see anyone in this draft who's a stud either. Maybe Watson or Mahomes but those guys are 2-3 year projects. At some point the Reid regime will get stale and it just feels like this will be the best they do.

It looked exactly like the Kelce drop in Indy.

I saw a wide open Maclin beating his man but turning around on a back shoulder pass that should have been over the top.
