look, I'm not a huge nationalist. jingoism has no place in the world, IMO. but I always get behind our national teams. and when somebody tells me that there's no place for another possible soccer fan (when the USA could use as many as they can get, fwiw), it pisses me off.

people don't start OFF as hardcore fans. the process begins with somebody taking an interest. that interest is nurtured through watching games and paying attention to the sport. knowledge is power. regardless of whether we're elite, I'll root for our national teams.

Man, this thread has petered out since the U.S. was eliminated. Am I the only one watching Japan v Paraguay?

This has been an enjoyable game, even though it is scoreless in the 83rd minute as I type this. Japan is a fun squad, I like these guys. They've had a few great chances this half but Paraguy has played some beautiful, textbook defense.

This ref is handing out yellow cards to Japanese players like candy. Meanwhile, Paraguay gets away with a clear red card situation earlier in the match.

That last yellow was lame. Unless something is flagrant then it should not be carded. Extra extra time sucks.
